Job Description
The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University (Los Angeles, CA) is seeking an individual to teach SMC 300.60 – ST: LA:
Sports Media Immersion:
Los Angeles, a 3 credit, 2-week course in sports for the Newhouse LA program Monday – Friday 10:00am – 3:00pm (May 11 – May 22, 2026);
Additional meetings for field trips TBA during the Maymester 2026 semester (May 11-May 22, 2026). This Maymester course offers students an immersive experience into the heart of a major sports media market — Los Angeles. The class meets at the Dick Clark Los Angeles Center, Los Angeles, CA from Monday, May 11, 2026 through Friday, May 22, 2026. It is anticipated that class will meet each day from 10AM to 4PM.
It is anticipated that some classes may be held during the day and some in the evening to be able to take full advantage of any relevant sports‑related opportunities.
Course description: The course bridges classroom concepts with real‑world industry practices. Through classroom instruction, site visits, meetings with industry leaders, attendance at sporting events, as well as creative projects, the instructor will help students to explore the multifaceted world of Los Angeles sports media. Up‑close and personal interactions with people who work for LA sports teams and venues will be part of the curriculum.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
- The ideal candidate will have had an extensive career and varied career in the sports media world of Los Angeles.
- It is imperative to have deep ties and connections to a wide array of sports industry professionals in order that they might be engaged as guest speakers or can provide invitations for relevant field trips for the students.
- Familiarity with the current landscape of sports media and its intersection with diversity and inclusivity.
The ideal candidate will need the ability to create and execute a 2‑week intensive syllabus including assignments to be graded.
Responsibilities- Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
- Ordering the appropriate books and on or before the first day of classes.
- Preparing for classes.
- Holding office hours each week to meet with students in the class and others.
- Grading in a timely manner student assignments and examinations for the course; and turning in mid‑semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
- Ability to personally instruct the class in the assigned classroom on the days it is designated to meet.
- Ability to hold office hours on campus.
- Ability to grade all assignments and examinations.
- Ability to operate standard classroom instructional technology, which may include computer, projector, document camera, etc.
