Pay Range: $2,084.07 - $2,146.59 per credit hour.

Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months’ salary unless otherwise specified.

Job Description

HED 712 – Research on the College Student (3 credits).

This residential (in-person) course is targeted to master’s and doctoral students in higher education/student affairs roles. It offers a comprehensive examination of research on college student access, persistence, and success, with particular attention to students from underrepresented and marginalized communities. Students explore who attends, persists, and graduates from U.S. colleges and universities, and engage with leading theoretical models on college access, choice, and student persistence/retention.

Drawing on national databases and scholarship, the course investigates the role of ideology, capital, habitus, and systemic educational inequities in informing and shaping students’ educational pathways and outcomes (e.g., sense of belonging, persistence, graduation) and how to promote conditions for student success and mental wellbeing. Instructor must have scholarly expertise in these areas, professional experience in knowing how to apply this knowledge to student-facing, higher education settings, and experience using collaborative, active‑learning strategies with a diverse graduate student population.

This position is part of a bargaining unit and is represented by the union SEIU, Local 200

United.

  • Earned doctorate and extensive exposure to academic research on college access and student success in higher education and ability to apply in student affairs/higher education settings.
  • Prior teaching graduate students in student affairs preparation/higher ed administration programs desirable.
Responsibilities
  • Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
  • Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
  • Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments.
  • Meeting all designated class periods. If unable to meet due to illness or emergency, exercise best effort to move to a synchronous or asynchronous option and notify faculty director and graduate studies of absence and plan to cover the class.
  • Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.
  • Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
  • Collect and submit student assessment data for accreditation purposes, if applicable.
  • Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
  • Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
