The Syracuse City School District is undergoing a new phase of innovation and transformation with the goal of ensuring that all students graduate high school with the skills needed to be ready for college and career. For Syracuse, all means all. The School Board and Syracuse community have charged the Superintendent with improving student achievement, and she is seeking a dedicated and diverse team of educators to partner with her in moving the district toward its goals.
The Syracuse City School District represents 35 schools and programs, including 6 high schools, 6 middle schools, 6 K‑8 schools, 13 elementary schools, and 4 alternative education programs, serving approximately 19,000 students Pre‑K–12. Of these students, 82.3% qualify for free or reduced‑price lunch, 22% are served by the Office of Special Education, and 83% are students of color.
ABOUT THIS POSITIONThe Coordinator of School Counselors oversees the K‑12 guidance department, providing leadership to school counselors, evaluating staff performance in partnership with school leaders, and ensuring the implementation of comprehensive, data‑informed counseling programs. This role involves aligning counseling services with New York State standards and supporting student academic, career, and personal/social development. This position collaborates regularly with school supervisors and leaders within Teaching and Learning and Student Support Services in order to maintain an effective counseling program.
REPORTSTO
Deputy Chief of Student Support Services
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITESOrganizes all aspects of the district’s comprehensive school counseling plan, revising and implementing the plan on a regular basis.
Coordinates mentoring partnerships and collaboration times for new counselors.
Works closely and collaboratively with counselors, psychologists, social workers, school principals, and other school and departmental leaders to develop topics for Professional Development.
Collaborates on professional development opportunities for school support teams including social workers, psychologists, school counselors and SSS/SISS TAs with other department leaders.
Works directly with K‑12 support staff to train staff on SEL interventions for students at all levels.
Works collaboratively with administrators and staff across departments (Office of Student Supports, Special Education, English Language Arts and Math, English as a New Language) to support the course catalog and course request process each year.
Monitors processes to ensure compliance and adherence to district procedures, state guidelines, and federal regulations.
- Co‑develops and maintains timelines for school counselor deliverables, in partnership with school supervisors and leaders within Student Support Services.
- Supports recruitment, selection, and placement process for new hires and transfers, along with evaluations of school counselors in partnership with school leaders.
- Proposes department budget, monitors expenses, and oversees contract development and implementation for counseling program.

CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTSNew York State School District Leader Certificate (SDL) or School District Administrator (SDA)
SALARY/SALARY RANGE- Salary and benefits pursuant to the Unit 2 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The starting salary for the 2026‑2027 school year is $116,981.
