Job Description

The Lead Academic and Professional Advisor plays an important role in the work of the College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell advising team. This position will be a professional leader with expertise in advising undergraduate students who are either exploring major options or who have already declared a major. This role requires collaboration with the advising team, faculty, and departments to provide outstanding service to our students, supporting their academic and professional goals and timely completion of their degrees.

This role carries a full advising caseload. Primary responsibilities include academic advising, career/professional, and post-graduation planning. In conjunction with best practices, the Lead Academic and Professional Advisor will design, develop, update, and deliver workshops for undergraduate students on topics related to major and/or minor selection, program requirements, career development, job search strategies, and graduate school planning. The Lead advisor acts in direct support of the Assistant Director to advance projects towards the strategic goal of the office.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelors degree, masters preferred. 3+ years experience in academic advising at the college-level is required.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Maintain knowledge of all academic advising and career counseling functions of the school and of allied offices to effectively advise students, faculty, faculty advisors and other defined stakeholders.
  • Expert level knowledge in academic counseling methods and career modeling will be required to interpret and communicate results of individual aptitude and career assessment instruments with this population.
  • Career exploration and counseling experience is required as part of academic advising experience. Ability to communicate and work with diverse populations is necessary, as are excellent interpersonal, planning, teamwork, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to independently interpret and make recommendations for improvement in advising policy and procedure.
Responsibilities
  • Provide academic and professional (career and graduate pathway) advising through one-on-one and group sessions for assigned cohort of undergraduate students. This position will have its own assigned student caseload. Ensure requirements are met for all undergraduate students for on-time graduation. Support assigned advising team in degree audits, establish regular communications with advisees, and maintain up-to-date and accurate student records utilizing University's prescribed software.
  • In conjunction with best practices, design, develop, update, and deliver a variety of career and academic workshops for undergraduate students on topics such as: major and/or minor selection, program requirements, career development, job search strategies, and graduate school planning. Support planning of special events that facilitate group advising, including collaborative events across campus that pertain to Arts and Sciences/ Maxwell students.
  • Collaborate and maintain relationships with faculty and staff in schools and colleges within SU to help identify and guide students towards successful college and post college paths. Partner with Alumni and/or Employer relations (Central) to assist in helping to achieve education and career goals. Serve as main point of contact with students and guide them through various program options in the University.
  • Identify, track, and report metrics on all career-related outcomes such as student appointments, career education engagement, internships, and placement into career and graduate school. Administer and interpret career-related assessments. Collect these data points utilizing the university-wide shared career technology software. Report metrics to College and University leadership as requested. Evaluate progress and assess programming and delivery for continuous improvement of student success.
  • Provide academic and professional advising leadership under the guidance of an Assistant Director of Advising. Responsible for training and coordination of delivery of advising programming within assigned advising team. Provide expertise, support, and direction to advisors within assigned advising team. Provide input on the performance of advisors within the team to the Assistant Director of Advising.
