Temporary Challenge Course Community Staff
Challenge Course facilitators work with Lead Facilitators and Challenge Course Managers to provide safe, effective programming in high ropes, low ropes and portable initiative activities under the direction of the Lead Facilitator. Challenge Course Facilitators are responsible for:
- Daily Inspection of Challenge Course Elements
- Setup and take down of challenge course elements
- Instruction and facilitation of games, initiatives and challenge course activities
- Facilitation of group development and educational outcomes (as planned by the Lead Facilitator)
- Assist in the completion of daily paperwork documenting operations and incidents
Employment is on a casual, as needed basis, and assignments are on a first come basis.
Education and Experience:
Current CPR/AED and First Aid Training (or willingness to become certified as such). Experience facilitating or participating in group processing/planning discussions. Familiarity with group/team development. Trained on SU Challenge Course Standard and local operating procedures. Demonstrates excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing, to both participants and other staff members. Ability to relate and work with diverse populations of participants.
Skills and Knowledge:
Show competency in the technical skills associated with the challenge course operation, including knots, belay skills and personal protective equipment such as harness and helmets. Current CPR/AED and First Aid Training (or willingness to become certified as such).
Responsibilities:
Demonstrates ability to use sound judgment to keep safety a high priority. Arrives prepared to facilitate by having reviewed program goals and Lead Facilitators program plan. Where necessary, plans games and processing questions. Team oriented and dedicated to the goals set forth by the Syracuse University Outdoor Education Program. Works as a team member with others in scheduling, facilitating, and operating the SU Indoor and Outdoor Challenge Course.
Responds to scheduling requests in a timely manner. Is reliable when scheduled. Arrives at facilitation site on time. Maintains a commitment to the success of the course. Follows Challenge Course standard and local operating procedures, and the program plan set by the Lead Facilitator.
Physical Requirements:
Challenge Course Facilitators should have the ability to perform their required duties for extended periods of time while exposed to adverse conditions including, but not limited to, rough terrain, precipitation, temperature extremes, and wind.
