Job Description- The Assistant Director of Academic and Career Advising reports to the Director of First Year Advising and plays an important role in the College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell advising team.
- Provides transformational and strategic leadership and supervision of a team of integrated academic and career advisors.
- Creates a welcoming and supportive environment for students, carries out the vision for the department, and works synergistically with the Division of Student Success, faculty, and academic leaders.
- Designs, develops, updates, and delivers workshops for undergraduate students on major/minor selection, program requirements, career development, job‑search strategies, and graduate school planning.
- Oversees academic and career programming including immersion trips, resume initiatives, and mock interview initiatives.
- Master’s degree and experience in a high‑level support or management role in higher education preferred; at least two years’ experience in academic advising preferred.
- Experience in assessment, planning, program reviews, self‑studies, academic advising, and working under time and multitasking pressures.
- Maintains knowledge of all academic advising and career counseling functions of the school and allied offices; expert in counseling methods and career modeling; interprets and communicates assessment results.
- Career exploration and counseling experience required; ability to communicate and work with diverse populations; excellent interpersonal, planning, teamwork, and organizational skills.
- Independently interprets and recommends improvements in advising policy and procedure.
- Relates well to students, parents, scholars, faculty, staff, and others from diverse cultural backgrounds; strong community building and collaboration skills.
- Passion for student development through national best practices.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; creates and maintains efficient systems and processes; identifies potential problems and mitigates them for reports.
- Manage office‑delivered programming including advising efforts for students on your team and career programming.
- Work closely with the Director of First‑Year Advising and the Director of Pre‑Health Advising as the primary liaison for pre‑health students.
- Identify and track pre‑health interested first‑year students; develop and deliver targeted programming; ensure timely guidance.
- Collaborate with campus partners to align first‑year advising practices with pre‑health needs; support advising team with resources, referral processes, and trends.
- Supervise an advising team and provide timely performance feedback.
- Provide direction for campus advising policies and procedures, collaborating with colleges, schools, Registrar, and Enrollment Management.
- Serve as an information resource for advisors, students, faculty, staff, and parents; provide expertise, support, and guidance.
- Provide academic and professional advising through one‑on‑one and group sessions for assigned undergraduate cohort.
- Ensure requirements met for all undergraduate students for on‑time graduation.
- Support advising team in degree audits; maintain accurate student records using university software; manage escalated student cases.
- Collaborate and maintain relationships with faculty and staff across schools and colleges to guide students toward successful paths.
- Partner with Alumni and/or Employer Relations to assist in achieving education and career goals.
- Serve as main point of contact with students and guide them through program options.
- Attend and participate in division, department, and university‑wide meetings; represent Office of Student Success as needed.
- Assess and analyze data related to early warning and at‑risk first‑year students; identify trends; inform outreach; guide proactive advising interventions.
- Collaborate with advising staff and campus partners to monitor student progress, evaluate support initiatives, and use data to improve retention, engagement, and success during the first year.
