Job Description
The Assistant Director of Academic and Career Advising, reporting to the Director of First Year Advising, plays an important role in the work of the College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell advising team. The assistant director provides transformational and strategic leadership and supervision of a team of integrated academic and career advisors, collaborates to create a welcoming and supportive environment for students, carries out the vision for the department, and works synergistically with the Division of Student Success, faculty, academic leaders, and the University as a whole.
In conjunction with best practices, the assistant director will design, develop, update, and deliver workshops for undergraduate students on topics related to major and/or minor selection, program requirements, career development, job search strategies, and graduate school planning. The assistant director will oversee academic and career programming run directly through the office, including immersion trips, resume initiatives, and mock interview initiatives.
Education and Experience- Master’s degree and experience in a high-level support or management role in higher education desired. At least two years’ experience in academic advising preferred.
- Experience in assessment, planning, program reviews, self-studies, academic advising, and working with individuals under time and multitasking pressures.
- Maintain knowledge of all academic advising and career counseling functions to effectively advise students, faculty, and other stakeholders.
- Expert knowledge in academic counseling methods and career modeling, interpreting and communicating results of individual aptitude and career assessment instruments.
- Career exploration and counseling experience required; ability to communicate and work with diverse populations.
- Ability to independently interpret and make recommendations for improvement in advising policy and procedure.
- Ability to relate well to students, parents, scholars, faculty, staff, and others from diverse cultural backgrounds; strong community building and collaboration skills.
- Passion for student development through cutting-edge national practices.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to create and maintain efficient systems, and proactively identify and mitigate potential problems for reports.
- Manage office-delivered programming including intrusive advising efforts for the students reporting to the advisors on the team and career programming.
- Work closely with the Director of First-Year Advising and the Director of Pre-Health Advising as the primary liaison for pre-health interested students within the first-year advising population.
- Identify and track pre-health interested first-year students, develop and deliver targeted programming, and ensure students receive timely, accurate guidance on pre-health pathways and expectations.
- Collaborate with campus partners to align first-year advising practices with pre-health advising needs and support the advising team by sharing resources, referral processes, and emerging trends.
- Supervise an advising team and provide timely performance feedback under the direction of the CAS/Maxwell Director of First-Year Advising.
- Provide direction for campus advising policies and procedures in collaboration with colleges, schools, the Registrar, and Enrollment Management.
- Serve as an information resource for advisors, students, faculty, staff, and parents in advising matters.
- Provide academic and professional (career and graduate pathway) advising through one-on-one and group sessions for an assigned cohort of undergraduate students.
- Ensure requirements are met for all undergraduate students for on-time graduation.
- Support assigned advising team in degree audits, maintain accurate student records using University’s software, and manage escalated student cases.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff in schools and colleges to guide students toward successful college and post-college paths.
