Assistant Director Academic Career Advising

Job Description

The Assistant Director of Academic and Career Advising reports to the Director of First Year Advising and leads a team of integrated academic and career advisors. The role provides transformational leadership, strategic direction, and supervision, fostering a welcoming environment for students and collaborating with student success divisions, faculty, and academic leaders across the university.

Key duties include designing, developing, updating, and delivering workshops on major/minor selection, program requirements, career development, job search strategies, and graduate school planning. The Assistant Director also oversees academic and career programming such as immersion trips, resume initiatives, and mock interview sessions.

Education and Experience

Master’s degree and experience in a high‑level support or management role in higher education desired. At least two years of academic advising experience preferred, with demonstrated skills in assessment, planning, program reviews, and self‑studies under multitasking pressures.

Skills and Knowledge
  • Extensive knowledge of academic advising and career counseling functions at the school level.
  • Expert proficiency in counseling methods and career modeling, including aptitude assessment interpretation.
  • Experience in career exploration and counseling as part of academic advising.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills, with the ability to engage diverse populations.
  • Ability to develop and implement advising policies and procedures and to recommend improvements.
  • Capacity to analyze data, identify trends, and design proactive advising interventions.
Responsibilities
  • Manage office‑delivered programming, including individualized advising and career workshops.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for pre‑health‑interested first‑year students, coordinating targeted programming and guidance.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to align advising practices with pre‑health needs.
  • Supervise an advising team, providing performance feedback and professional development.
  • Serve as an information resource for advisors, students, faculty, staff, and parents regarding advising matters.
  • Provide one‑on‑one and group advising in career and graduate pathways for assigned cohorts.
  • Track degree audit status and maintain accurate student records within university software.
  • Manage escalated student cases arising from direct‑report advisors.
  • Work with faculty and staff across schools to guide students toward successful post‑college pathways.
  • Partner with Alumni and/or Employer Relations to support educational and career outcomes.
  • Represent the Office of Student Success at division, department, and university meetings as needed.
  • Analyze data on early warning and at‑risk students, informing outreach strategies and advising interventions.
