The department of Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition is searching for new part-time Professional Writing Instructors to teach sections WRT 205 Spring 2026. Multiple sections may be available; teaching load for new instructors may be anywhere from 1 to 4 sections per semester dependent on need and availability. All offerings are contingent on budgetary approval and sufficient enrollment. All offerings are face‑to‑face in Syracuse, NY;

remote teaching is not available.

Qualifications:

  • MA or MS with graduate coursework in Composition and Rhetoric, English or related field.
  • Experience teaching writing at college or high school level required.
  • Prior experience as a Professional Writing Instructor at SU is preferred; current internal applicants will receive priority consideration.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
  • Ordering appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
  • Preparation of projects or other student assignments.
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.
  • Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
  • Meeting all the designated class periods.
  • Submitting completed mid‑semester progress reports and final grades according to University Regulations.
  • Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
  • Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
  • Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty.
  • Keeping current with developments and trends in the department’s curriculum and in the field of rhetoric and composition.
