Part-Time Practicum: Clinical Mental Health Counseling

COU 750 – Practicum in Counseling (3 Credits) Description

A one-semester, 100‑hour, clinical placement to advance the student’s counseling skills. Video or audio taping at the practicum site is required for supervision. Students receive weekly individual and group supervision on campus. Repeatable 2 times for 6 credits maximum. Advisory recommendation Prereq: COU 624 and 644.

• Doctorate (or ABD) in counselor education is required.
• Practicum is a supervised field placement in a school, agency, college, or rehabilitation setting during which clinical mental health counseling students assume the varied role of counselor.
• Qualified applicants should have experience working with varied clinical populations and be familiar with providing clinical supervision in a group format.

• Licensure or certification as a professional counselor is preferred.
• Demonstrated effective teaching and supervisory practices that can be applied to a clinical internship course.

• Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
• Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
• Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments.
• Meeting all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet your class due to illness or emergency, exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or obtain a substitute. Notify the department chair of your absence and plan to cover the class.
• Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
• Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.
• Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
• Participate in student recitals or showings.
• Collect and submit student assessment data for accreditation purposes, if applicable.
• Submitting completed mid‑semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
• Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
• Providing an updated CV annually or upon request of the department or school.
• Participating in departmental meetings or workshops.
• Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty.
