Position: Part-Time Faculty: HOM/MHL 267 European Music before 1800 (Fall 2026)

Job Description

The College of Arts & Sciences at Syracuse University seeks a Part‑Time Faculty to teach HOM/MHL 267 European Music before 1800 (3 Credits) for the Department of Art & Music Histories during the Fall 2026 semester.

This class focuses on European music before 1800 in its cultural and philosophical contexts through extensive listening and analytical focus on selected composers and works. Presupposes familiarity with musical notation, terms, and contexts.

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined based on their per-credit-rate history within the hiring department. This position is subject to funding availability and enrollment.

Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or ABD in Music History or a related field.
Responsibilities
  • Developing and updating a class syllabus.
  • Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
  • Preparing lectures, projects or other student assignments.
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours of two hours per week.
  • Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the class.
  • Meeting all designated class periods. If unable to meet due to illness or emergency, exercise best effort to reschedule the class or obtain a substitute, and notify the department chair or designated contact of absence and plan to cover the class.
  • Working with the academic unit to maintain student learning outcomes.
  • Submitting completed final grades according to University regulations.
  • Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
  • Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
  • Completing all other course-related duties as outlined by the department’s policies for part‑time instructors.
