Hours: Standard University business hours: 8:30am - 5:00pm (academic year); 8:00am - 4:30pm (summer). Hours may vary based on operational needs.

Syracuse University’s Institute for Democracy, Journalism & Citizenship has established a Visiting Fellows program to bring innovative and impactful voices in media, government, politics, nonprofits and business to IDJC’s headquarters in Washington DC for a semester‑long non‑academic affiliation. The program will provide funding and prestigious affiliation for visiting leaders to collaborate and network with university practitioners, researchers, students, alumni, and the public.

IDJC Visiting Fellows will receive office space in our Dupont Circle location, use of our audio/video studio for podcast and TV appearances, and the time and platform to develop thought leadership and convene seminars and events. IDJC Visiting Fellows will bridge academia, policy‑making, and real‑world impact, enriching the intellectual ecosystem by bringing diverse voices and fostering innovation.

• Bachelor’s degree required;
  Master’s degree preferred.
• Seven (7) plus years of experience working in a media, government, non‑profit, public policy, think tank, or other professional field related to media, governance and civic engagement.

• Recognized excellence in their professional field.
• Reputation for high ethical standards.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in non‑partisan dialogue.
• Passion for working with students, emerging leaders, and/or colleagues in a collaborative environment.
• Broad professional experience that can contribute to the expansion of IDJC’s mission.

• Submit a proposal focused on a major project or public‑facing initiative to undertake while at the Institute. Topics that promote and advance the mission to strengthen trust in journalism and democracy will be considered. Contributions may include, but are not limited to:
• Research – collaborate on developing applications for the Institute’s research that will drive new knowledge into practice; develop synergies between researchers and partners in media, government, and/or public institutions by leveraging professional networks.
• Creative Activity – pursue in‑depth, substantial creative work; provide opportunity for deep and focused thinking and writing to develop new policy applications for the media industry and/or governmental and public institutions to promote trust in governance and democracy.
• Student Engagement – guest lecture in a range of classes; collaborate with faculty to develop and enrich curriculum; provide advice on how Syracuse University’s academic programs might respond better to current industry and public service environments; contribute toward creating professional development content to address the needs of practitioners.
• Public Dialogue – engage in events to promote civil dialogue to address pressing public issues by modeling and promoting diversity of thought, freedom of speech, and nonpartisan conversations around important and substantial topics.
• Experiential Learning – enhance student learning through a wide range of activities outside the classroom providing students with career advice, assisting with internship opportunities, sharing experience.
