Writing About Black Culture (Fall 2026)

The Department of African American Studies at Syracuse University seeks one part-time instructor to teach two sections of AAS
201:
Writing About Black Culture for 3 credits each at the undergraduate level in the Fall 2026 semester with a start date of 8/24/2026. This course is designed to teach expository writing with the aim for students to develop analytic and writing skills by engaging diverse topics and media, which have shaped African American print, visual, and sound cultural production. The two course sections will meet in-person on the SU Campus.

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined based on their per-credit-rate-history within the hiring department. All course offerings are subject to funding availability and enrollment.

Masters degree required;
Doctorate (or ABD) preferred. Doctoral training in Black Studies and Humanities preferred.

Teaching two sections of AAS
201:
Writing About Black culture Developing and/or updating a class syllabus. Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date. Preparing lectures, projects or other student assignments. Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours of two hours per week. Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the class. Meeting all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet with your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute.

You must also notify the department chair or their designated contact of your absence and of your plan to cover the class. Working with the academic unit to maintain student learning outcomes. Submitting completed final grades according to University regulations. Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner. Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations. Completing all other course-related duties as outlined by your department's policies for part-time instructors.
