Position: Part-Time Faculty: AAS 231: African American Literature to 1900: An Introduction (Fall 2026)
The Department of African American Studies at Syracuse University seeks a part-time instructor to teach "African American Literature to 1900:
An Introduction" at the undergraduate level in the Fall 2026 semester with the start date of August 17, 2026.

The course meeting day/time is scheduled for Wednesday, from 8:00 am to 9:20 am, with an in-person format on the SU Campus.

AAS 231:
African American Literature to 1900:
An Introduction (3 credits)

The course introduces African American literature extending from Africa to the Americas and spanning slavery, Reconstruction, and the era of Racial Uplift. It includes autobiography, fiction, and poetry by such authors as Wheatley, Douglass, Jacobs, Webb, Hopkins, Dunbar, Chesnutt, and Du Bois.

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined based on their per-credit-rate-history within the hiring department.

All course offerings are subject to funding availability and enrollment.

Qualifications

* Masters degree required;
Doctorate (or ABD) preferred.

* Doctoral training in Black Studies and Humanities preferred.

Responsibilities

* Teaching one section of AAS 231:
African American Literature to 1900:
An Introduction.

* Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.

* Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.

* Preparing lectures, projects or other student assignments.

* Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours of two hours per week.

* Holding regular preparatory meetings with Graduate Teaching Assistants who lead Discussion Sections: 12:45-2:05 and 3:45-5:05 pm on Mondays.

* Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the class.

* Meeting all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet with your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute.

* You must also notify the department chair or their designated contact of your absence and of your plan to cover the class.

* Working with the academic unit to maintain student learning outcomes.

* Submitting completed final grades according to University regulations.

* Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner.

* Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.

* Completing all other course-related duties as outlined by your department's policies for part-time instructors.
