Overview

ITT is seeking a Power Electronics Engineer for VIDAR, a breakthrough in industrial motors. VIDAR is a patented motor with embedded variable speed intelligence built for harsh industrial environments. For decades, variable speed drives have been bulky, expensive, and hard to install, which stalled adoption at just 15 percent of rotating equipment. VIDAR changes that. It installs as easily as replacing a motor, cuts total installed cost by up to 50 percent compared to a VFD, and opens a $6B market with no direct competitor targeting industrial environments.

The Power Electronics Engineer is responsible for the engineering, design and validation of new cutting‑edge motor‑drive topologies. This position will assist in the development of converter and motor control algorithms development for motor‑drives. S/he will coordinate with internal teams, external manufacturing partners, universities, and 3rd party certification agencies to achieve program goals.

Responsibilities
  • Perform system level design and integration of power electronic circuits
  • Design, implement and troubleshoot control systems for power electronic products such as converters and inverters for motor‑driven applications
  • Perform PCB (gate driver, gate drive power supply, etc.) design review and test
  • Design, implement and test advanced digital control algorithms, digital filters and the general control of power electronics systems
  • Create test procedures to verify hardware & firmware designs
  • Ensure products meet safety and agency requirements (ex. UL, IEC)
  • Perform system level simulations to evaluate design tradeoffs, extract power converter and passive losses. Develop simulation models targeted for control design using PLECS and C‑code; previous experience with other tools such as MATLAB/Simulink/PSIM is desired
  • Support the development and validation of power electronics hardware through embedded software and firmware activities, including implementation of control and modulation strategies
  • Develop embedded C code for real‑time control of power converters and motor drives, including algorithm integration and system bring‑up
  • Support the design and implementation of FPGA‑based control functions using VHDL to support high‑speed and deterministic control requirements
  • Develop scripts and tools (e.g., Python) for data acquisition, analysis and post‑processing to support testing and validation activities
  • Interact with customers and project partners relating to program goals
  • Maintain organizational standards of quality and performance
  • Prepare technical reports on results and design decisions
  • Travel < 20%
Qualifications
  • M.S. in Electrical Engineering (PhD preferred), with specialization in Power Electronics or related fields
  • Strong experience in power converter topologies, including AC/DC, DC/AC, DC/DC and AC/AC systems; experience with motor‑drive is highly desired
  • Proven hands‑on experience in hardware development and validation including PCB prototyping, lab testing (O’SCOPE, multimeters), debugging and root‑cause failure analysis
  • Solid background in power converter control, including modulation techniques and control algorithm development and implementation
  • Experience with real‑time embedded software development for control systems, C/C++
  • Proficiency with simulation and modelling tools such as PLECS, MATLAB/Simulink, PSIM or equivalent
  • Experience in mixed‑signal PCB design for power electronics applications (ADC/DAC integration, signal integrity considerations), using tools such as Altium Designer or similar
  • Understanding of parasitic effects and their impact on switching behaviour and commutation performance in power semiconductors
  • Familiarity with industry standards and safety requirements for power electronics systems
  • Experience with Wide Band Gap (WBG) semiconductors (SiC, GaN) highly desirable
  • Exposure to FPGA‑based control implementations and VHDL programming is a plus
  • Proactive and results‑driven
  • Strong analytical mindset with a proactive, hands‑on approach; ability to operate effectively in a fast‑paced R&D environment

Equal employment opportunity, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.
