Job Description Summary
Early- to mid-career Mechanical Engineer responsible for improving HVAC test laboratory effectiveness through systems thinking, data integrity, and standard work. This role partners with technicians, engineering, controls, and IT to reduce ambiguity, improve lab utilization, and increase confidence in test data. The position is designed as a force multiplier for the lab and does not routinely operate test equipment.
General ResponsibilitiesCarrier is seeking a systems-minded Test Engineer to support HVAC laboratory operations by improving how tests are planned, understood, and supported. The role reduces reliance on tribal knowledge, improves data quality, and enables technicians to execute tests efficiently through clear processes, standard work, and meaningful metrics.
Key Responsibilities- Partner with lab technicians and engineering teams to resolve ambiguous or blocked test situations.
- Diagnose HVAC system behavior using sensor and test data.
- Troubleshoot data-quality issues, including signal noise, instrumentation errors, and system interfaces.
- Design and improve data acquisition (DAQ) architectures and system integrations.
- Develop, design, and integrate lab equipment and hardware setups.
- Serve as a bridge between NPD engineering, controls, and IT teams.
- Create and implement standard work for emerging lab systems and capabilities.
- Lead root‑cause analyses of recurring lab and data issues.
- Develop dashboards, metrics, and summaries to improve lab visibility and utilization.
- Prepare clear, executive‑ready summaries for lab leadership.
- Operate independently on system‑level lab issues within established key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Make technical judgment calls to keep lab work moving when direction is unclear.
- Drive measurable improvements in lab utilization, process stability, and visibility.
- HVAC Technical Certificate with 5+ years of engineering experience in test, lab, systems, or controls environments.
- or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
- Working knowledge of HVAC systems sufficient to evaluate system behavior and data validity.
- Experience troubleshooting instrumentation, sensors, and DAQ systems.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting electrical and controls wiring diagrams.
- Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, formulas, data analysis).
- Ability to communicate effectively with lab technicians and lab leadership.
- Experience with data acquisition systems, PLCs, controls, or industrial interfaces.
- Experience with dashboards, metrics, or process improvement.
- Willing and able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
- Willing and able to work at heights up to 20 feet.
The annual salary for this position is between $64,500.00 and $ annually. Factors which may affect pay within this range include, but are not limited to, skills, education, experience, and other unique qualifications of the successful candidate.
Other CompensationThis position may be entitled to short‑term cash incentives, subject to plan requirements.
