About This Position:
A Project Engineer functions as a fully competent engineer in all aspects of transportation infrastructure projects, including bridge and culvert rehabilitations, retaining wall design, and miscellaneous structural design for transportation infrastructure. The role involves developing and evaluating plans and criteria, guiding junior staff, and ensuring designs comply with AASHTO and NYSDOT standards. The position requires working outside normal business hours to meet client requests and attend meetings.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience progressing transportation infrastructure design projects in New York State, including culvert and bridge replacement or rehabilitation projects
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines
- Strong communication, presentation, and client‑relation skills – both verbal and written
Responsibilities include:
- Prepare or check calculations and direct design procedures to ensure compliance with AASHTO and NYSDOT standards
- Produce design reports, specifications, plans, studies, permits, and designs for bridge projects
- Develop plan details for bridge replacement and rehabilitation projects in accordance with NYSDOT standards
- Work within assigned scope and budget, coordinating with client and team for efficient solutions
- Perform structural analysis and stability review of existing/new bridges and structures for proposed construction loading and temporary conditions
- Develop demolition/erection sequence plans, including stability analysis during construction stages
- Design temporary shoring towers/systems for gravity and lateral loads
- Detail hydraulic jacking and structural lifting systems
- Develop crane pick plans, including geometry and feasibility studies, site logistics, crane sizing, capacity checks, and design of load distribution mats and custom rigging
- Serve as Project Engineer with autonomy for project‑related tasks and as a designated client contact; may have responsibilities on multiple projects
Essential Job Functions:
- Plan, schedule, conduct, or coordinate detailed phases of engineering work
- Apply standard technology and procedures and conduct analysis using appropriate applications
- Anticipate bigger project objectives and complete complex engineering assignments
- Review cost and quantity estimating by others
- Attend project meetings and present specific aspects of engineering assignments
- Prepare reports for all levels of project complexity
- Assume client responsibility for routine basic projects and coordinate multi‑discipline projects
- Provide delegation and supervision of Engineers and Technicians, and oversight of quality and standards
- Serve as consultant and technical leader on proposals and projects, providing guidance and strategy assistance
- Develop innovative approaches to solve technical issues within fiscal constraints
- Review product documents for technical quality assurance and compliance with standards
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program or an approved equivalent
- 5-10 years of experience in a similar engineering role
- Professional Engineering (P.E.) licensure in NY or ability to obtain reciprocal licensure
Hourly Pay Range:
Albany and Syracuse, NY: $49.00/hour – $56.00/hour
Poughkeepsie, NY: $53.90/hour – $61.60/hour
