distinguishing features of the class
the work involves assisting police officers by performing routine duties that do not require arrest powers. Incumbents in this class are trained in applicable laws, procedures and techniques to the extent required to perform limited support functions. These functions typically involve various assignments in the uniform, administration, investigations and community services bureaus, as needed. Assignments are received orally, in writing or by email from a police officer, sergeant, lieutenant or captain.
When employed by the city of syracuse police department, assignments and supervision may be received from a civilian supervisor. Work performance is monitored by direct observation and review of reports. No supervision is exercised in this class. Does related work as required.
typical work activities
uniform bureau
- assists the public by answering questions and explaining departmental procedures via both face-to-face contact and by phone.
- logs in visitors and escorts them to various divisions/offices.
- performs routine traffic direction.
- issues parking tickets for violations.
- directs the removal of vehicles that are abandoned or obstructing traffic.
- assists police officers at the scene of personal injury accidents by directing traffic and maintaining crowd control.
- acts as a liaison between business establishments in an assigned district and the police department.
- collects and delivers mail both within and outside the department.
- may complete standard reports of minor property damage, minor crimes or complaints.
- may summon assistance for sick or injured persons.
- may be required to operate a motor vehicle.
administration bureau
- assists the public in the public safety building and city hall by answering questions and explaining departmental procedures.
- answers telephone inquiries from the general public and directs callers to sworn members of the department as needed.
- completes routine record checks as requested by sworn members of the department.
- performs clerical duties, such as, but not limited to, data entry, making copies and filing.
- logs and tags inventory and property.
- assists with deliveries and shipments within the public safety building.
- issues departmental orders or updates via departmental email.
- may be required to operate a motor vehicle.
investigations bureau
- provides information and assistance to both department members and the public by phone or in person.
- logs in visitors and sex offenders.
- performs clerical duties, such as, but not limited to, data entry, making copies and filing.
community services bureau
- provides information and assistance to the public by phone or in person.
- logs in visitors.
- performs clerical duties, such as, but not limited to, data entry, making copies and filing.
- collects and delivers mail both within and outside the department.
- may be required to operate a motor vehicle.
- may fill in for a school crossing guard, as needed.
minimum qualifications
graduation from high school, possession of a high school equivalency diploma or possession of a united states armed forces general education certificate.
