As a Database Architect, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the database architecture that supports our organization's information systems. You will play a crucial role in optimizing database performance, ensuring data integrity, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to meet business requirements.

The Database Architect / Developer will work with all subject matter expects from departments within the Office of the Chief Operations Officer and other Syracuse University departments. This work includes integration of data driven business processes, development of data interfaces, critical tactical and strategic analytical activities, data security and access, as well as development of in-depth dashboards and reports. The Database Architect / Developer will perform development (coding), analysis (troubleshooting), and production support, and provides overall expertise in the area of data warehousing, data integrations and reporting applications.

Education and Experience

* Bachelor's degree and or five to seven years of relevant work experience.

* Strong proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server and Power Shell and Python scripting, with hands-on experience building and maintaining ETL pipelines that integrate data across multiple systems including Oracle, Active Directory, and third-party APIs.

* Experience with version control systems, particularly Git, is a plus. Knowledge of data warehousing concepts, data modeling principles, and ETL best practices strongly desired.

* Must be able to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, communicate clearly at a level appropriate to the audience, and collaborate well both independently and as part of a team.

* Strong written and verbal communication skills required.

* This position functions as the sole developer on the team, requiring the ability to independently manage and prioritize multiple projects with minimal oversight.

Responsibilities

* Develop and implement database solutions that align with business requirements, ensuring efficiency, scalability, and optimal performance. Design database structures, tables, and relationships based on data modeling principles. Monitor and optimize database performance by fine-tuning queries, indexing, and configuration settings. Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks to ensure responsive and efficient database operations. Establish robust security measures to protect sensitive data from unauthorized access or potential breaches.

Implement strategies for database scalability, considering factors such as data volume, user concurrency, and system performance. Conduct regular database maintenance tasks, including backups, updates, and patches, to ensure system stability. Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues, providing timely and effective solutions.

* Working with all Auxiliary Services Units subject matter experts and external business partners including collaborating with Central ITS to identify deficiencies in existing reporting and data processing capabilities. Identifying potential technology improvements in systems, reporting and or data integrations to eliminate these deficiencies. Participate in special projects including new system implementations where data exports and imports create additional efficiencies to increase performance and generate maximum output.

* Developing documentation on existing and new data warehousing integrations. Create and maintain data models, documenting database structures, relationships, and dependencies. Develop and update comprehensive documentation for database architecture, processes, and best practices. Maintain and improve existing work instructions and procedures.

* Research and stay abreast of changes in data warehouse technology and collaborate with manager and colleagues in how to implement and leverage the new and changing technology.

* Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

* Standing 15% of the shift. Sitting 65% of the shift. Walking 15% of shift. Frequent kneeling and climbing stairs.

* Able to lift 50 pounds waist high, 20 pounds shoulder high, 15 lbs. above head. Must be able to carry weight 15ft, with pushing, pulling and holding weight.

* Comfortable with occasional ladder use/heights

* Wrist and finger dexterity sufficient to use and operate a variety of hand tools and manipulate small objects.

* Ability to see, hear/listen, touch and speak is essential to work.

* Work requires reading, writing, analyzing data, problem solving, and conducting research on a daily basis.

* Work environment involves 80% indoor and 20% outdoor.
