Location: City of Syracuse

A leading provider of construction services is seeking a Commercial Operations Manager to oversee operations in the Syracuse, NY area. This position will support the Commercial Install Manager, Commercial Service Manager, and Area General Manager in overseeing all service, maintenance, and new construction projects for commercial HVAC and plumbing systems. This hands‑on leadership role balances field supervision, project coordination, customer relations, and team development, while ensuring safety, quality, profitability, and on-time delivery.

Responsibilities

(include but not limited to)
  • Oversee project execution for commercial HVAC and plumbing service, maintenance, and new construction projects.
  • Assist in planning, scheduling, and executing commercial service calls, PM contracts, and new installations.
  • Monitor job progress, labor hours, material usage, and change‑order opportunities.
  • Conduct regular site walks to verify safety compliance and quality standards.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to field technicians, plumbers, and apprentices across service and construction crews.
  • Manage daily work orders, dispatch emergency calls, and adjust crews based on workload.
  • Mentor junior techs and enforce apprenticeship ratios and training plans.
  • Perform ride‑alongs and spot‑check installations (brazing, piping, ductwork, controls, start‑up).
  • Serve as a secondary point of contact for key commercial accounts (hospitals, data centers, schools, office towers).
  • Respond to service escalations and coordinate 24/7 emergency response.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers for pricing and lead times.
  • Track job costs versus budget and flag potential overruns early.
  • Approve timecards, expense reports, and material purchase orders.
  • Assist in monthly P&L review and WIP reporting.
  • Update job management software with notes, photos, and close‑out documentation.
  • Enforce OSHA 10/30, EPA 608, fall protection, and confined‑space safety protocols.
  • Ensure weekly toolbox talks are held and monthly safety audits are completed.
  • Identify upsell opportunities during service calls (retrofits, IAQ upgrades, DDC controls).
  • Assist in bid walks, take‑offs, and proposal preparation for projects ranging $50K–$2M.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in commercial HVAC/plumbing, with at least 2 years in a lead or supervisory role.
  • Coursework or experience in HVAC, plumbing, or construction management preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude (chillers, VRF, hydronics, sanitary/waste systems).
  • Excellent communicator; able to explain technical issues to non‑technical clients.
  • Comfortable with Excel dashboards, labor forecasting, and margin analysis.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, work in mechanical rooms, rooftops, and confined spaces.
  • Tolerate extreme temperatures and noise levels typical of construction sites.
  • Competitive base salary: $85,000–$95,000 annually (base only; total compensation may vary based on experience, location, skills, and education).
