Position: Equipment Maintenance Technician (Automation)
Location: City of Syracuse

Position Summary

The Equipment Maintenance Technician is an experienced‑level role responsible for advanced maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of production equipment, utilities, and facility systems in a plastics manufacturing environment. This role performs daily building start‑up/shutdown procedures, supports utilities and facility health, and partners closely with Production, Engineering, and EHS to maximize equipment uptime, quality, and safety. The technician contributes to continuous improvement initiatives and mentors entry‑level team members.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Production Equipment & Automation Maintenance – Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on plastics processing equipment; troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and control system issues; set up vision systems; calibrate and adjust machine settings; support equipment upgrades and commissioning.
  • Utilities & Facility Systems – Operate, monitor, and maintain air compressors, chilled/process water, cooling towers, vacuum pumps, boilers, heat exchangers, and filtration systems; perform routine rounds, log readings, and respond to alarms; coordinate vendors for utility services and certifications.
  • Daily Building Start‑Up / Shutdown – Execute start‑up checklists, verify utilities and safety systems, and walk critical areas; perform end‑of‑shift shutdown tasks, secure utilities, and stage equipment.
  • General Carpentry & Building Repairs – Conduct carpentry and facility repairs, perform facility upkeep, install and repair fixtures, work with contractors for larger projects.
  • Technical Diagnostics, Documentation & Compliance – Interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and PLC logic; conduct root‑cause analysis, implement corrective actions; maintain CMMS records; comply with OSHA, ISO, 5S, and lean initiatives.
  • Collaboration, Mentoring & Support – Communicate status, provide guidance to junior technicians, partner with EHS and Engineering, assist with spare parts inventory.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical certificate or associate degree preferred.
  • 3–5 years of maintenance experience in manufacturing; plastics or high‑speed production experience preferred.
  • Experience with utility systems (compressed air, chilled/process water, pumps) and general carpentry/building maintenance.
Technical Skills
  • Proficient in mechanical systems, pneumatics, hydraulics, and industrial electrical up to 480V.
  • Working knowledge of PLCs, sensors, VFDs, servos, robotics, and automation troubleshooting.
  • Experience with plastics processes (injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming) preferred.
  • Vision system setup and parameter adjustment experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, equipment manuals; use precision measuring tools.
  • Skilled in safe use of carpentry, hand, and power tools.
Certifications (Preferred)
  • CEW Electrical Certification (or equivalent).
Physical Requirements

Lift up to 50lbs., stand, walk, bend, and climb; work in hot/cold and noisy environments; work at heights or in confined spaces as needed; consistent use of PPE.

Hourly Rate

$24.50 - $30.00 per hour
