Digital Strategist

BaseNYC is looking for a Freelance Digital Strategist to help define what a website needs to accomplish before design begins.

We’re looking for senior, client-facing strategists who can move between research and synthesis, business objectives and user needs, brand thinking and practical website requirements. This person should be able to bring structure to complex problems, form a clear point of view, and give creative teams a strong foundation for UX and design.

• You are as comfortable asking the right questions as you are forming a point of view.
• You can facilitate conversations with senior stakeholders and identify what matters within a large amount of information.
• You understand that digital strategy is not an isolated deliverable. Its purpose is to create clarity for the teams that follow and connect brand ambition, audience needs, content, experience, and technology into a coherent direction.
• You have experience working on projects where digital experience and brand expression are closely connected.

• Plan and lead client kick-offs, working sessions, and stakeholder interviews.
• Understand business objectives, organizational priorities, audience needs, and measures of success.
• Audit existing websites and digital ecosystems to identify strengths, friction points, gaps, and opportunities.
• Conduct competitive, peer, and broader digital landscape research to identify relevant patterns, expectations, and opportunities for differentiation.
• Review available analytics, audience research, brand strategy, and other inputs, and incorporate them into the strategic process.
• Synthesize research into clear insights, opportunities, principles, and recommendations.
• Define the strategic role of the website within the broader brand and customer experience.
• Develop content strategy and content frameworks that establish what the website needs to communicate, how content should be prioritized, and how it can support both audience and business objectives.
• Create and present clear, compelling strategy presentations that build alignment with clients and provide direction for subsequent UX and design work.
• Integrate closely with Base’s strategy, design, UX, technology, and project management teams, remaining involved enough through subsequent phases to help ensure the strategic intent carries forward.

• Significant experience leading digital strategy for complex, design-led website projects.
• Experience in an agency, consultancy, or similarly collaborative environment.
• Strong writing, thinking, facilitation, and presentation skills.
• Ability to structure ambiguous problems and translate research into clear strategic direction.
• Experience developing content strategy, audience thinking, digital ecosystem audits, and strategic recommendations.
• Comfort working directly with clients and senior stakeholders.
• Experience working with organizations where digital experience and brand expression are closely connected is particularly relevant.

Rate: A typical day rate for this work would fall between $700 and $1,200, exact amount to be determined based on experience and project requirements.
