Location: City of Syracuse
Overview
Reports To: Executive Director & Director of Operations
Status: Non-Exempt
Hours: 20 hours per week (schedule determined in collaboration with the Executive Director; occasional evening flexibility may be required)
Compensation: $30 per hour
Benefits: PTO and sick leave
Position SummaryThe Grant Writer/Fund Development Specialist plays a vital role in advancing our mission by securing institutional funding and supporting broader fundraising efforts. This part-time position is responsible for researching, writing, submitting, and managing grant proposals while cultivating and stewarding relationships with funders. The ideal candidate is a strong storyteller, highly organized, and motivated by measurable impact.
Key Responsibilities- Research and identify grant opportunities from foundations, corporations, and government sources
- Write, submit, and track grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and required reports
- Collaborate with program and leadership staff to gather program data, outcomes, and narratives
- Maintain a grants calendar to ensure timely submissions and reporting deadlines
- Track funding outcomes and maintain accurate records in donor and grant management systems
- Support broader fund development efforts, including donor communications and fundraising campaigns as needed
- Assist with stewardship activities such as funder acknowledgments and impact updates
- Produce high-quality, competitive proposals with achievement benchmarks to be established
Skills & Qualifications
- Strong grant writing and persuasive storytelling skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to translate program goals and data into compelling proposals
- Strong research and prospect identification skills
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines independently
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Experience with donor databases or grant management systems preferred
- Prior experience in nonprofit fund development or grant writing
- Familiarity with foundation and government funding processes
- Knowledge of nonprofit compliance and reporting requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle
- Ability to pass a background check
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently
- Ability to compose professional correspondence with minimal supervision
- Superior customer service skills
- Friendly, approachable, and collaborative demeanor
