Addiction RN Fellow

Job Summary

This is a temporary, 6‑month training program in collaboration with NYS OASAS and Crouse Addiction Treatment Services. The role involves carrying out duties and responsibilities per legal requirements under the Registered Nurse Scope of Practice, with emphasis on leading a culture of safe care. Responsibilities include assessing, planning, diagnosing, evaluating, exercising judgment and problem‑solving, and creating and implementing care plans. The RN administers prescribed medications in accordance with organizational policies and procedures, provides education to patients and families to promote health, facilitates rehabilitation, and maintains wellness.

The RN evaluates the effectiveness of interventions, revises plans appropriately, advocates for patients and families while applying ethical principles of care, and consults patient data to identify trends and enhance care plans. Monitoring patient responses to treatment and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to adjust plans is a core activity. Accurate, objective hand‑off communication during caregiver transitions is required. Evidence‑based practice is utilized to deliver quality patient care and to demonstrate critical thinking in clinical problem‑solving situations.

The educational purpose of the program is to train fellows in the fundamentals of addiction medicine, including treatment of Substance Use Disorders (SUDs), assessment and treatment of psychiatric disorders in the presence of comorbid SUDs, and management of medical complications of Addiction and Addiction‑related disorders.

NYS licensed or registered RN. Prior experience in an outpatient setting (specialty area) is strongly preferred. Current BLS certification through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross is required.

Work Days:
Monday – Friday daytime hours.

In synch with SUNY Upstate's mission to improve community health through education, biomedical research, and patient care, the program at Upstate Addiction Medicine / Crouse Health aims to enhance community health and support individuals battling substance use disorders. The program’s research is designed to lead to innovations for optimal patient care and to disseminate information among colleagues.

Group 7: $28.85 per hour. Salary information is a general guideline only and may vary based on candidate skills, experience, qualifications, and internal equity, market, and business considerations.
