the city of syracuse department of parks & recreation is currently looking for qualified candidates for the position of assistant superintendent of parks and grounds maintenance.
the work involves responsibility for assisting the superintendent of parks grounds maintenance in planning, coordinating and supervising the operation and maintenance of the city of syracuse parks. An employee in this class supervises the maintenance of grounds and athletics fields, the cleaning of buildings and snow removal from streets, roads and walkways at city parks. The incumbent also has responsibility for assigning and supervising the work of subordinate employees performing park buildings and ground maintenance tasks.
General supervision is received from the superintendent of parks grounds maintenance who allows the incumbent some latitude for independent judgment and initiative in the operation and maintenance of park buildings and grounds. The incumbent has the ability to act in place of superintendent of parks grounds maintenance in his or her absence. Does related work as required.
typical work activities:
- planning new methods of performing maintenance tasks to park buildings and grounds areas.
- improving productivity and utilization of staff and equipment.
- preparing general reports including narrative and numerical data regarding park buildings and grounds maintenance activities.
- purchasing materials, supplies & equipment needed for park operation & maintenance; keeps up to date inventory.
- planning and assigning crews to perform park building and grounds maintenance tasks.
- inspecting park areas on a regular basis to identify park buildings and grounds maintenance needs and plans methods to meet those needs.
- training by demonstration or by verbal instructions, employees in the performance of park buildings and grounds maintenance tasks and equipment operation.
- supervising park grounds maintenance tasks such as cutting grass with mowers, picking up papers, leaves, brush and other debris; trimming hedges and edging lawns with small hand tools; marking athletic field lines and boundaries with chalk.
- supervising the repair of playground equipment which includes the performance of unskilled tasks that assist skilled tradespeople such as welders in soldering playground equipment such as swing sets or fences; digging post holes; installing or tightening nuts, bolts and washers using hand tools such as wrenches or screwdrivers.
- supervising snow removal activities such as plowing snow from roads and walks; shoveling snow from walks and intersections; spreading rock salt over roads and walks.
- monitoring the ongoing performance of automotive and other vehicular repair and
- maintenance tasks.
- overseeing work of skilled tradespeople involved in construction, installation, repair and remodeling.
- drives park vehicle from main office to various parks.
minimum qualifications
a) three (3) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in park operation, park maintenance, or park management, at least one (1) of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or,
b) graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the new york state board of regents to grant degrees with an associate’s degree and one (1) year supervisory experience in parks operation, park maintenance, or park management.
