Position SummaryThe Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Syracuse University seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher to assist in the management of the Noble Gas Geochemistry laboratory and conduct noble gas geochemistry research. This fully funded, full‑time, one‑year position (subject to renewal) requires in‑person work. The laboratory houses two state‑of‑the‑art noble gas mass spectrometers (a Helix SFT and an Argus VI) and two extraction and purification lines (one for fluids and one for rocks).
Candidates will analyze gases, water, and rock samples, perform experimental work on shallow and deep groundwater, natural gas, and rock samples, collaborate with faculty on research projects, and may conduct independent research. Optionally, candidates may participate in teaching, including lectures and laboratory instruction for undergraduate and graduate students.
- Ph.D. in geochemistry or a related field before starting the position.
- Demonstrated excellence in research, evidenced by a solid publication record or significant research accomplishments.
- Comfortable in a variety of programming environments and proactive at finding solutions and developing new methodologies.
- Experience with noble gas (or gas source) mass spectrometry, maintaining ultrahigh vacuum systems; programming in LabVIEW or Python and Qtegra; excellent written and oral communication; and a track record in academic publications.
- Solid knowledge of noble gas analysis procedures desired but not required.
- Run samples and troubleshoot noble gas mass spectrometers.
- Build computational models of noble gas geochemistry results.
- Communicate results clearly in oral and written formats, including talks, poster sessions, and journal articles.
- Mentor graduate and undergraduate students, purchase supplies, participate in literature discussions, and contribute to writing proposals.
