Airport Police Detective

Syracuse Regional Airport Authority (SRAA) – operator of Syracuse Hancock International Airport – is seeking an Airport Police Detective for the airport police force. The Detective conducts criminal investigations, gathers evidence, and enforces federal, state, and local laws on airport property. The role is investigative focused with field work support to patrol officers and independent investigative work. Supervision is exercised only for investigative activities, not for routine patrol duties.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct investigations into criminal activity on airport property, including theft, fraud, assault, and other violations.
  • Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects; prepare detailed written reports and case files.
  • Collect, preserve, and process physical and digital evidence in accordance with legal standards.
  • Coordinate with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, including TSA, FBI, FAA, and other agencies for joint investigations.
  • Execute search and arrest warrants as authorized.
  • Prepare cases for prosecution and testify in court as needed.
  • Respond to major incidents and crime scenes to lead or support investigative efforts.
  • Maintain intelligence files and monitor trends related to airport security and criminal activity.
  • Maintain the department property, evidence room, and program.
  • Conduct police background investigations for new police department members and assist in background investigations for airport personnel and vendors.
  • Utilize surveillance equipment and investigative technologies and participate in emergency response planning and drills.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all investigative activities.
  • Conduct supervisory activities over police officers when a first line supervisor is absent.
Salary and Benefits

Hourly Rate: $45.43 per hour, with shift differential for 2nd and 3rd shift work.

Requirements
  • Thorough knowledge of airport law enforcement principles, FAA and TSA policies, and state and local laws.
  • Proficiency in personal computer use, Microsoft Office Suite, and radio communications technology.
  • Effective oral and written communication, bilingual language skills a plus.
  • Strong judgment, independent work ability, and decision making aligned with the mission of SRAA.
  • Ability to work independently or as a team in high‑stress, life‑threatening situations and follow commands without hesitation.
  • Physical and mental capability as required by New York State law enforcement statutes, including hand and arm steadiness, lifting/pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs, and essential fitness for non‑gun and gun duties.
  • Valid New York State Basic Police Officer Certificate (BPOC).
  • Five (5) years of experience as a police or peace officer, with at least one (1) year of law enforcement experience at the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority Police Department, meeting CFR Part  requirements.
  • High school graduate or equivalent diploma from an accredited institution, or U.S. Armed Forces certificate of successful completion of the general education test at time of appointment.
  • U.S. citizenship at time of appointment.
  • Valid New York State driver’s license at time of appointment.
  • Failure of a felony conviction; misdemeanor or other offense, including traffic violations, may bar appointment; polygraph and psychiatric examinations required for selection.
  • Security clearance and TSA regulations compliance; subject to drug and alcohol testing policy for safety‑sensitive positions.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience conducting in‑depth police investigations at Syracuse Hancock International Airport.
