Position SummaryUnder the direction of the Security Supervisor, the Senior Security Officer (Armed) is responsible for the performance of all security and safety duties. Provides armed, uniformed security presence throughout St. Joseph’s Health campuses, assesses threats, responds to and mitigates offenses, and reports to the Lead Security Officer and other leadership. Coordinates with law enforcement based on threat assessment. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education,Training, Experience, Certification and Licensure
- Valid New York State Armed Security Guard License (includes firearms training and a valid NYS pistol permit).
- OR active NY State police officer status at the time of hiring.
- Active police officers must obtain an armed security license and a NYS pistol permit within six months of hiring.
- Successful completion of the DCJS Basic Course for Police Officers preferred.
- High School Diploma or GED Certificate required;
Associate Degree preferred. - Valid NY State driver’s license required.
- IAHSS Basic Security Certification within one year of hire.
- FEMA Emergency Management Institute courses (IS‑100c) within 90 days of hire.
- BLS Certification required upon hire or within three weeks of hire.
- Minimum five (5) years of experience in armed security guard, healthcare/hospital security, or law enforcement.
- Five (5) years of law enforcement experience preferred.
- Must pass a psychiatric evaluation prior to hire.
- Knowledge of New York State Penal Law and Criminal Procedure Law.
- Understanding of the use‑of‑force continuum and its application in a private security setting.
Frequent exposure to adverse working conditions such as noise, noxious odors, extreme temperatures, hazardous materials, and communicable diseases. Routine or potential exposure to blood, body fluids, excretions, or secretions.
Physical Demands- Frequent close‑eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing).
- Sedentary work (sitting).
- Light work (standing, walking, lifting 51 lb) and patient handling (maximum 35 lb).

Principal Responsibilities Equipment- Maintains department equipment safely.
- Operates department equipment, including motor vehicles, safely.
- Demonstrates proper and safe use of all assigned equipment, including firearm and pepper gel.
- Performs security/safety rounds and fixed‑post assignments following prescribed procedures.
- Uses training and experience to de‑escalate workplace violence, mitigate threats, and handle emotionally disturbed persons (EDP).
- Responds to calls for service promptly and appropriately.
- Conducts patient, visitor, and staff searches in accordance with the search policy.
- Ensures investigations are thorough, complete, and submitted in a timely manner.
- Identifies hazards and threats to campus safety, initiates corrective measures, and alerts supervisor.
- Exhibits strong interpersonal skills for fact‑finding, problem solving, and dispute resolution.
- Manages and leverages video‑management and access‑control systems.
- Completes thorough and professional written reports of all assigned investigations using the SJH designated reporting systems.
- Prepares legible, coherent, and concise reports with required follow‑up actions.
- Fully investigates incidents posing imminent threat to the life and safety of colleagues, patients, visitors, or others.
