Maintenance Technician Job Description
The Maintenance Technician performs preventative and corrective maintenance on conveyor and material handling systems, with a strong focus on mechanical work supported by solid industrial electrical knowledge. This role troubleshoots industrial controls using blueprints and schematics, supports all breakdowns at local package handling facilities, and ensures reliable operation of conveyors, motor controls, and related equipment across multiple sites in Upstate New York.
Responsibilities- Perform comprehensive preventative maintenance on material handling equipment, including conveyors, electrical and mechanical systems, motor controls, and PLC‑controlled equipment, with preventative maintenance as the primary focus of the role.
- Serve as the primary maintenance resource for assigned facilities, responding to all equipment breakdowns, diagnosing issues, and restoring operation in a timely and safe manner.
- Troubleshoot industrial controls by reading and interpreting blueprints and electrical schematics and tracing issues back to the processor or control source.
- Inspect bearings, belts, motors, and other mechanical components to determine wear, identify failing seals, and decide when parts require replacement.
- Perform mechanical and electrical maintenance on industrial three‑phase systems, including 480V equipment, motor controls, AC and DC motors, and variable frequency drives.
- Support PLC‑based systems by troubleshooting input/output issues, ladder logic symptoms, and control signals, even without programming responsibilities.
- Conduct general facility maintenance tasks as needed, including basic handyman work such as changing lights and addressing minor facility repairs.
- Travel primarily between Syracuse and Binghamton and to other facilities within approximately a two‑hour radius to support multiple sites as required.
- Collaborate with a team‑oriented service organization, communicating clearly about equipment status, maintenance needs, and completed work.
- Apply safe work practices and follow all relevant procedures when working on electrical and mechanical systems in industrial environments.
- Utilize basic fabrication and welding skills, when applicable, to support repairs and modifications to material handling equipment and related structures.
- Minimum of 3 years of industrial maintenance experience.
- Hands‑on experience working on conveyor systems in an industrial environment.
- Strong knowledge of industrial electrical systems, including 480V and three‑phase wiring.
- Experience working with industrial motor controls, including AC and DC motors and related control components.
- Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints and electrical schematics to troubleshoot issues back to the processor or control source.
- Proficiency in mechanical and electrical maintenance on industrial equipment, including bearings, belts, and material handling systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot PLC‑controlled equipment, including understanding of PLCs, ladder logic symptoms, and I/O‑related issues (without the need to program).
- Comfort working independently as the primary maintenance resource for assigned facilities.
- Willingness and ability to travel within approximately a two‑hour radius, primarily between Syracuse and Binghamton.
Skills & Qualifications
- Good understanding of preventative maintenance practices and the ability to prioritize PM work as the main function of the role.
- Ability to assess bearing condition, including recognizing when seals are worn or failing and determining appropriate replacement timing.
- Experience with variable frequency drives (VFDs) and their role in motor control applications.
- Exposure to conveyor maintenance, including belts, rollers, and associated mechanical components.
- Familiarity with industrial maintenance concepts related to programmable logic controllers and motor control centers.
- Fabrication and welding experience, which is considered a strong plus.
- A proactive, can‑do attitude and willingness to perform general handyman tasks and support broader facility needs as required.
- Team‑oriented mindset with strong communication skills to work…
