Positions Overview:
The City of Syracuse is seeking a skilled Traffic Signal Repair Worker II to perform and lead the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of traffic signal systems and related traffic control devices. This position involves skilled and semi-skilled electrical, electronic, and mechanical work performed in the field and in the shop.
Employees in this role work with traffic signal heads, controllers, foundations, conduits, poles, communication systems, surveillance equipment, and related infrastructure. The work requires considerable physical effort, technical knowledge, and the ability to respond to emergency situations outside of normal working hours.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Lead and participate in excavation and installation work for traffic signal foundations, conduits, ground rods, traffic signs, and related devices.
- Install, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair traffic signal systems and communications equipment.
- Perform bench testing, diagnostics, and maintenance of electrical, electromechanical, and electronic signal control equipment.
- Perform board-level repairs of electronic devices.
- Program traffic signal and surveillance computer equipment.
- Perform emergency traffic signal repairs independently.
- Read and interpret plans, manuals, diagrams, and schematics.
- Assist in maintaining traffic signal parts inventory.
- Coordinate with Dig Safe NY to identify and mark underground utilities.
- Maintain records of routine and emergency work activities.
- Perform maintenance and repairs on equipment and tools used in the work.
- Assist senior personnel in learning advanced traffic signal repair techniques.
- Operate motor vehicles, excavators, concrete saws, jackhammers, compressors, and other powered equipment as required.
- May perform welding, carpentry, masonry, construction, and related work associated with traffic signal maintenance.
- May perform maintenance and repairs on security camera systems used by various City departments.
- Good knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in traffic signal installation, maintenance, and repair.
- Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices.
- Working knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to supervise and direct the work of others.
- Ability to apply principles of electricity, electronics, and mechanics.
- Ability to read and understand detailed electrical and electronic schematics.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Ability to safely operate motorized, powered, and manual equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform work safely around co-workers, motorists, and the public.
- Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Candidates must meet one of the following requirements:
Option ATwo (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals and related control devices.
Option BTwo (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the maintenance and repair of commercial electronic equipment.
Option CGraduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's Degree in Electronic Technology or a closely related field.
Special RequirementsWhen required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess and maintain a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the class of vehicle being operated, including any required endorsements. Continued possession of the required license is a condition of employment.
Excavator CertificationWhen required to operate an excavator, employees must obtain and maintain Excavator Certification in accordance with New York State General Business Law. Certification must be obtained during the probationary period. Training will be provided upon appointment.
Work Environment- Outdoor work performed in varying weather conditions.
- Work near active roadways and traffic.
- Heavy lifting, digging, climbing, and operation of powered equipment.
- May be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency call‑outs.
