Job Summary
Cox Fleet is currently hiring a Shop Trailer Mechanic II. This dedicated on‑site shop position focuses on certified DOT inspections, preventative maintenance, light repairs, and various trailer system repairs including brakes, air lines, pumps, liftgates, and welding. The technician works under the supervision of a Senior Shop Trailer Technician or higher and must comply with company policies and performance metrics.
Duties & Responsibilities- Follow and comply with safe operating practices and procedures.
- Determine parts requirements and coordinate with the Shop Parts Department.
- Maintain a safe, clean work environment and assist in daily cleanup.
- Work with Service Writers to assess customer needs and resolve issues.
- Prioritize tasks and manage concurrent assignments.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (“PM”), DOT inspections and follow‑up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty trailers.
- Use hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
- Document work in Repair Orders (“RO”) with photos and parts used.
- Complete DOT forms and other required documentation promptly.
- Achieve productivity within standard repair times.
- Communicate with the Shop Manager to obtain repair estimate approvals and purchase order numbers.
- Perform minor adjustments and repairs on trailer systems such as brakes, air lines, pumps, liftgates, and steering.
- Diagnose, adjust, and repair trailer equipment and systems using test instruments (handheld computers, pressure gauges).
- Assist Shop Trailer Technician I with diagnostics.
- Perform all work in compliance with safety, health, environmental, OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.
- Complete all company required safety training and daily pre/post trip inspections of shop‑assigned service trucks.
- High School Diploma or GED with at least 3 years of experience in a related field (or equivalent training and experience).
- Valid driver’s license and safe driver record.
- Valid DOT Medical Card or ability to obtain one within 72 hours of hire.
- Authorization to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.
- Ability to lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for extended periods; perform moderately heavy labor.
- Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary for the job.
- OEM training and certifications are preferred.
- Welding experience required.
- Participation in and completion of all company required training.
- ASE T8 (PMI) certification
- ASE T4 (Brakes) certification
- ASE T5 (Suspension) certification
- ASE T6 (Electrical and Electronic Systems) certification
- ASE T7 (HVAC) certification
- ASE 608/609 certification
- Knowledge of trailer parts and systems, including design, use, repair, and maintenance.
- Ability to make repair or maintenance decisions based on new information.
- Physical stamina for heavy lifting and repetitive tasks.
- Accurate judgment of object proximity and measurement.
- Clear and organized communication of information.
- Effective two‑way communication with individuals and groups.
- Ability to determine appropriate tools and equipment.
- Logical reasoning to evaluate alternative solutions.
