Compensation

Hourly base pay rate is $18.17 - $27.31 per hour. The hourly base rate may vary within the anticipated range based on location and the candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation including commission and incentive programs.

Job Summary

Cox Fleet is currently hiring a Shop Trailer Mechanic I. This is a dedicated on‑site shop position; emergency roadside repairs are not performed. The Shop Trailer Technician I will perform DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, light repairs, and other duties such as trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, brake chambers, and steering systems. The Technician I can perform more advanced repairs under supervision of a Shop Trailer Technician II or higher and assists higher‑level technicians to learn advanced mechanical skills and diagnosis.

A successful Technician I complies with all company policies and achieves high performance metrics.

Responsibilities
  • Always follow safe operating practices and procedures.
  • Independently determine parts required and coordinate with the Shop Parts Department.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment; assist in cleanup at day’s end.
  • Apply formal training and on‑the‑job experience to perform tasks and evaluate technical information.
  • Work with Service Writer to assess customer needs, provide information or assistance, and satisfy expectations.
  • Manage concurrent assigned tasks, prioritizing work activities and time allocations effectively.
  • Act with integrity, demonstrate honesty, keep commitments, and adhere to ethical and professional standards.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (“PM”), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment.
  • Use hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
  • Document work according to company standards; upload pictures, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders using the company‑issued device and/or Karmak application.
  • Complete DOT forms and all other documentation in a timely manner.
  • Maintain a high level of productivity and work within or close to standard repair times.
  • Communicate with the Shop Manager and support team to obtain approval for repair estimates, retrieve purchase order numbers, and discuss Repair Order findings.
  • Perform all work in compliance with safety, health, environmental policies, and federal regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and DOT.
  • Participate in and complete all company‑required safety training.
  • Maintain shop‑assigned service trucks, conduct safety checks, and perform daily pre/post‑trip inspections.
  • Perform minor adjustments and repairs on trailer equipment and systems such as brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, brake chambers, and steering systems.
  • Adhere to company policies, processes, and procedures.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED and up to 2 years of related experience.
  • Supply a set of hand tools necessary for duties.
  • OEM training and certifications are preferred.
  • Participate in and complete all company‑required training.
  • Must pass DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background screening and DOT physical.
  • May submit a current DOT medical card with more than 4 months remaining as a substitute for a physical; otherwise, a physical is required.
  • Safe driver required; 3‑year MVR review required. Must hold a valid state driver’s license and maintain a Driver Qualification File.
Required Certifications or Certifications Obtained Within 18 Months
  • ASE T8 (PMI) certification.
Preferred Certifications
  • ASE 608/609 certification.
