L&I LABOR AND Industries Auditor ; In-Training

Job Overview

The Department of Labor & Industries is seeking a L&I Auditor 3 to support the agency’s mission of safeguarding the safety and health of the workforce. The auditor ensures employers carry industrial insurance and pay the correct premium as it relates to assigned risk classifications. The role involves conducting audits of business financial records, performing on‑site visits, evaluating compliance, providing technical assistance, and preparing audit reports.

Assigned duty station:
Tacoma, WA. Salary range: L&I Auditor 3 – $4,866 to $6,542 per month.

• Identify businesses suspected of non‑compliance.
• Screen, schedule, coordinate, and conduct audits of business financial records.
• Evaluate and verify financial records.
• Conduct computer research on firms’ accounts with other agency programs.
• Review employment contracts and conduct fact‑finding interviews.
• Perform on‑site tours of employer facilities and survey business activities to evaluate operations.
• Prepare reports of audit findings, subpoenas, and other legal documents as needed.
• Testify at industrial insurance appeals and court proceedings.

• Minimum of 20 semester or 30 quarter hours of accounting coursework (may include one Finance or Business Law class).
• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent education/experience).
• For L&I Auditor 1 and 2, at least two (or one for level
  2) years of professional accounting or auditing experience; for level 3, at least two years of experience.
• Or successful completion of the Labor & Industries Auditor Training Program.
• Ability to apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

• Strong knowledge of RCW Title 51, WAC 296‑17, and WAC 296‑17A.
• Certifications such as CPA, Fraud Examiner, Internal Auditor, Information Systems Auditor, Management Accountant, or equivalent.
• Master’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Economics, or a closely allied field.
