Overview

An established heavy civil and asphalt paving organization is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Asphalt Paving Superintendent to lead and manage asphalt paving operations across multiple concurrent projects. This role is responsible for supervising paving crews, coordinating labor, equipment, and materials, enforcing safety and quality standards, and ensuring projects are delivered on schedule and within budget.

The Asphalt Paving Superintendent plays a key leadership role in driving operational efficiency, developing field personnel, and delivering consistent, high-quality asphalt paving for municipal, commercial, and private-sector projects.

Responsibilities
  • Maximize productivity of asphalt paving crews through effective allocation of labor, equipment, and trucking resources.
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee daily paving operations to ensure efficient crew utilization and minimal downtime.
  • Visit job sites in advance of paving activities to verify grades, layouts, and site readiness; coordinate corrective actions as needed.
  • Collaborate with plant leadership to confirm mix designs, production schedules, and resource availability.
  • Review executed contracts to understand project scope, schedules, mix requirements, and notice provisions.
Safety & Compliance
  • Enforce all safety policies, procedures, and project-specific PPE requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and internal safety standards across all paving operations.
  • Lead by example in promoting a strong safety culture among employees and subcontractors.
Quality Control
  • Ensure high-quality asphalt paving through active field supervision and inspection of placement and compaction.
  • Promote best practices in paving techniques, workmanship, and consistency across crews.
  • Coordinate with project management teams, owners, and inspectors to address and resolve quality issues in a timely manner.
Scheduling & Coordination
  • Coordinate daily and weekly with operations leadership, project managers, construction coordinators, and dispatch to align crews and equipment.
  • Prepare and communicate weekly paving schedules and operational updates.
  • Coordinate paving activities with internal project teams and external contractors to ensure proper sequencing.
  • Participate in job setup meetings, preconstruction meetings, weekly construction meetings, and internal operations meetings as required.
Equipment & Maintenance
  • Work closely with maintenance leadership to schedule repairs, preventative maintenance, and equipment availability.
  • Monitor equipment condition and proactively identify maintenance needs to prevent production disruptions.
Administrative & Reporting
  • Review paving foremen timecards daily to confirm accuracy, labor hours, and correct cost coding.
  • Utilize construction management systems to track labor, production metrics, and job costs.
Leadership & Workforce Development
  • Assist with recruiting, hiring, and promotion of paving foremen, operators, and crew members.
  • Support training and development of apprentices and less-experienced personnel.
  • Coach, mentor, and evaluate field personnel to drive performance, accountability, and professional growth.
Required Qualifications
  • Proven experience supervising asphalt paving or heavy civil construction operations.
  • Strong field-based construction management background with hands-on leadership experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and technical documents.
  • In-depth knowledge of asphalt paving methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior hands-on experience in construction trades or asphalt paving operations.
  • Experience using Heavy Job or similar construction management software.
  • Familiarity with Heavy Bid or comparable estimating platforms.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety standards.

Work Environment Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk job sites, climb equipment, and work extended hours during peak paving seasons.
  • Willingness to work occasional nights or weekends based on project demands.
