Experienced Asphalt Crew Member Position Overview

The Experienced Asphalt Crew Member is a skilled member of the field crew responsible for performing asphalt paving, repair, and maintenance work under the daily direction of a Foreman. This position builds on the core expectations of a Crew Member while requiring demonstrated experience with asphalt placement, raking, compaction, grading, joint construction, and other core paving activities.

Experienced Asphalt Crew Members are expected to understand the fundamentals of quality asphalt installation, recognize conditions that may affect the finished product, and perform assigned work with limited task-level direction. They contribute to crew productivity by anticipating production needs, supporting equipment operations, and helping less-experienced Crew Members develop proper asphalt techniques.

While the Foreman remains responsible for jobsite leadership, safety, and overall execution, the Experienced Asphalt Crew Member serves as a skilled craft resource who helps ensure asphalt work is completed safely, efficiently, and to Rainier's quality standards.

Key Responsibilities 1. Asphalt Placement & Paving
  • Perform skilled asphalt paving, repair, patching, and maintenance activities.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in asphalt placement, spreading, raking, handwork, and compaction.
  • Properly rake and shape asphalt to establish appropriate grade, drainage, transitions, edges, and finished surfaces.
  • Construct and finish joints, seams, tie-ins, edges, and transitions to existing pavement.
  • Perform handwork in areas inaccessible to paving equipment while maintaining appropriate grade and finished appearance.
  • Recognize proper asphalt depth, temperature, consistency, and compaction considerations during placement.
  • Identify segregation, low spots, high spots, drainage concerns, poor transitions, or other conditions that could negatively affect finished quality.
  • Communicate potential quality or production concerns to the Foreman before they result in preventable rework.
  • Perform asphalt patching and repair work using appropriate preparation, placement, and compaction techniques.
2. Jobsite Preparation & Production Support
  • Assist with site preparation, including demolition, excavation, grading, sweeping, blowing, tack application, and material staging.
  • Help establish proper subgrade and base preparation before asphalt placement.
  • Safely operate appropriate hand tools and small equipment such as plate compactors, jumping jacks, saws, blowers, and other paving-related equipment.
  • Work safely alongside pavers, rollers, skid steers, trucks, and other heavy equipment.
  • Assist with truck positioning, material delivery, and paving operations to maintain consistent production flow.
  • Anticipate material, tool, and equipment needs to minimize downtime and support crew productivity.
  • Assist with general Crew Member responsibilities outside of asphalt work as business and crew needs require.
3. Safety, Compliance & Worksite Control
  • Follow all company safety protocols, applicable regulatory requirements, and Foreman direction.
  • Wear required PPE and demonstrate safe work practices around hot asphalt, moving equipment, traffic, and active jobsites.
  • Maintain awareness of equipment blind spots, truck movements, pedestrian and vehicle traffic, and changing jobsite conditions.
  • Participate in daily safety huddles and hazard assessments.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and hazard-free work areas.
  • Report unsafe conditions, near-misses, equipment concerns, or other hazards immediately.
  • Model safe equipment and tool use for less-experienced Crew Members.
4. Quality & Efficiency
  • Perform asphalt work with accuracy, attention to detail, and an appropriate sense of urgency.
  • Understand how grade, drainage, material placement, compaction, joints, and finishing techniques contribute to the quality and longevity of the finished product.
  • Produce smooth transitions, consistent surfaces, clean edges, and quality finished work.
  • Recognize workmanship or site-condition concerns and communicate them before work progresses unnecessarily.
  • Minimize material waste, unnecessary handwork, callbacks, and preventable rework.
  • Maintain productive pace while balancing safety and quality.
  • Inspect assigned work and proactively correct deficiencies within the scope of the role.
  • Demonstrate care for company tools and equipment through proper operation, cleaning, and storage.
5. Teamwork & Communication
  • Receive overall jobsite direction from the Foreman while independently executing assigned asphalt responsibilities.
  • Communicate clearly with the Foreman regarding grade, drainage, material, equipment, production, or quality concerns.
  • Coordinate effectively with equipment operators and other Crew Members during paving operations.
  • Understand their role within the paving sequence and anticipate what is needed to keep production moving.
  • Model safe, productive, and quality-focused work practices.
  • Share asphalt knowledge and help less-experienced Crew Members learn proper paving, raking,…
