A Union Operating Engineer is a skilled tradesperson who operates and maintains heavy construction equipment such as bulldozers, cranes, excavators, loaders, and other machinery used in construction, mining, and industrial projects.
Job Responsibilities- Equipment Operation – Operate heavy machinery such as cranes, bulldozers, graders, pavers, forklifts, and excavators.
- Maintenance & Repairs – Inspect, maintain, and perform minor repairs on equipment to ensure proper functioning.
- Site Preparation – Assist in grading, excavation, and other site preparation tasks.
- Safety Compliance – Follow OSHA regulations and safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
- Reading Blueprints – Interpret construction plans, grade stakes, and survey marks to complete tasks accurately.
- Collaboration – Work with other construction professionals, including laborers, engineers, and project managers, to complete projects efficiently.
- Experience in operating heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of construction safety standards.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and site plans.
- Strong mechanical skills for minor repairs and maintenance.
- Physical stamina and strength to work long hours in various weather conditions.
- Membership in the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) or other relevant union.
- Completion of or enrollment in an apprenticeship program or equivalent experience.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required for some roles.
- Ability to pass drug screen.
- Primarily outdoors on construction sites, highways, industrial plants, and mines.
- May involve long shifts, overtime, and work in extreme weather conditions.
- Wages as determined by local union agreement and/or prevailing wage rates, as applicable.
