Position SummaryThis Part‑Time Faculty position is responsible for preparing and teaching courses in U‑S History, Pacific Northwest History, and/or Native American History for the History Department at Tacoma Community College.
Reports to the Dean for Educational, Social & Behavioral Sciences (ESBS) and works closely with the History/Philosophy/Political Science Program Chair and faculty.
Essential Functions- Prepare and instruct transfer level classes in U‑S History, Pacific Northwest History, and/or Native American History in person, online, or hybrid modalities. Possible courses include:
- HIST
146, U‑S History I (17th and 18th centuries); HIST
147, U‑S History II (19th century); HIST
148, U‑S History III (20th century); HIST
214, Pacific Northwest History; HIST
219, Native American History. - Provide course‑related communication and support via scheduled office hours and email.
- Utilize the college LMS, Canvas, for engagement across all modalities.
- Comply with state and federal law and submitted syllabi, grades, bookstore orders, and other related administrative procedures.
- Participate in the college’s professional development and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion events.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in history or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
- Graduate coursework in history, including U‑S History and/or Pacific Northwest History.
- Experience teaching at a community college and/or on the freshman & sophomore levels.
- Experience with online classroom platforms such as Angel or Blackboard.
- Competence to teach a variety of courses for the History Department.
- Professional and courteous interactions with students, faculty, and staff.
- Commitment to fostering critical and inclusive curricula.
- Flexibility to achieve instructional and general responsibilities.
- Dynamic delivery methods for diverse student proficiency and learning styles.
- Proficiency with computers as instructional aids.
- Appreciation of diversity and cultural awareness.
- Excellent communication strategies and internal/external engagement.
- Ethics and integrity.
- Subject to a criminal background check prior to employment.
- Proof of authorization to work in the United States required at the time of hire.
Part‑time faculty may become eligible for healthcare and retirement benefits after the second consecutive quarter of half‑time or more employment. Part‑time faculty are also eligible for a private leave day per academic year, sick leave, and a health care benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance.
