Job Description
Intermittent Custodian – hourly, intermittent position to provide custodial support during regular staff absences at the University of Washington.
As a UW employee, you will help maintain a learning environment that promotes health, safety, and integrity across the Tacoma campus, including restrooms, classrooms, laboratories, student gathering spaces, auditoriums, offices, and conference rooms. You will also serve as a role model for students by demonstrating professional, courteous, and helpful conduct.
Duties and Responsibilities- Clean and sanitize restrooms, shower rooms, and fixtures in accordance with UWT campus procedures and standards; refill restroom dispensers; apply cleaning chemicals per safety procedures.
- Clean whiteboards and chalkboards; replace classroom supplies; dust and wipe furniture; sweep, mop or vacuum floors; reset space furnishings; empty trash, recycling, and compost containers; pick up litter on campus grounds; maintain all areas in a clean and orderly condition.
- Strip, clean, buff, and apply finish to floors; use floor buffers/polishers; vacuum and deep clean carpets with extraction equipment.
- Use and maintain assigned equipment and hand tools such as vacuum, broom, mop, squeegee, ladder for cleaning and general maintenance; adhere to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and operating equipment.
- Lock and unlock interior spaces; secure the building by checking for unlocked doors and windows and reporting any issues to lead/supervisor and Campus Safety and Security; report unauthorized occupants.
- Follow written and/or verbal instructions regarding the use of chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures.
- Report needs for repair and/or maintenance.
- May wash interior or reasonably accessible exterior windows.
- May clean and related activities within a reasonable distance from buildings using hand-operated tools or small power equipment to remove snow or debris, or sweep sidewalks or stairs.
- May move furniture, equipment, supplies, and tools on an incidental basis.
- May operate high-pressure washer.
- Perform related duties as required.
Physical ability to do required work.
Additional Requirements- Ability to be physically active for the entire shift while completing cleaning tasks, including lifting up to 35 lbs.
- Proper use of safety equipment to prevent injury to self or others.
- Ability to communicate in person, by radio, electronically, and over the phone.
- Ability to use computer equipment to complete reports and timesheets, generate service orders, maintain inventories, etc.
- 1-3 years of custodial, janitorial, or housekeeping experience in schools and/or commercial buildings.
- 1-3 years of floor machine experience, such as buffers or scrubbers.
Pay Range
: $21.28 – $23.91 per hour.
