Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced ICU RN for a 13-week travel assignment at a small community hospital, requiring a minimum of 2 years of ICU experience and proficiency in vent management, invasive line management, and cardiac rhythm interpretation.
Responsibilities- 6-bed ICU within a small community hospital setting
- Med-surg ICU unit — no cardiac surgery (no open hearts, no balloon pumps, no hypothermia protocol, no dialysis/CRRT, no neuro interventions)
- Patient population includes sepsis, pneumonia, COPD, CHF, GI bleeds, ETOH/IVDA, SI/psych, COVID, stable CVA/TBI, and surgical patients (ortho and general surgery)
- Procedures performed include manual proning and temporary pacemaker management
- 1:2 nurse-to-patient ratio
- 12-hour day shifts (0700–1930)
- 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation of approximately 2 weekends per month
- No on-call requirements
- Schedule is provided 6 weeks at a time based on unit needs — no self-scheduling
- Travelers float in turn with staff; float destinations include PCU (2
West) and the inpatient hold zone (Blue & Green Zone) in the ED — floating to PCU is not considered a float assignment - PCU ratios are consistently 4:1, with possible flex to 5:1
- EMR:
Epic (experience preferred) - IV pumps:
Alaris; medication dispensing:
Pyxis; monitors: GE - First-time travelers may be considered depending on overall experience level
- Orientation consists of a 4-hour day session with a clinical educator (badge, logins, unit tour, policies/procedures) followed by 1 shift on the unit
- CNA support is not built into staffing but can be requested through the house supervisor when all 6 patients are high acuity
- 24/7 support includes: HUC/unit secretary, respiratory therapy, hospitalist, on-call intensivist, and telemetry monitoring/tech
- No dedicated charge nurse in the ICU; charge nurse support available from the PCU
- Phlebotomy handles peripheral draws; STAT labs are walked to the lab by ICU staff; RNs are responsible for their own central line draws
- 1–2 holidays required per contract
- Up to 7 days of requested time off (RTO) may be approved
- Scrub color: any solid color

- Active WA state RN license or a compact RN license currently in hand
- Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum 2 years of ICU experience required
- Strong peripheral IV skills (preferred)
- Proficiency in cardiac rhythm interpretation required — an exam will be administered prior to arrival
- Competency in invasive line management (CVP, A-lines), IV medication titration, and vent/trach/high-flow BiPap/CPAP management required
- Two professional references from a supervisor or above (charge nurse, manager, director) required — one reference accepted at time of consideration, second required prior to start
