Position: ADVANCED PRACTICE NURSE (GASTROENTEROLOGY)

Overview

Advanced Practice Nurse (Gastroenterology) – Madigan Army Medical Center, Tacoma, Washington

Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA

Madigan Army Medical Center is a Level II Trauma Center in Washington State, providing care to both military and non‑beneficiary patients at Joint Base Lewis‑McChord.

Responsibilities

Provides credentialed Nurse Practitioner services to adult patients within the Gastroenterology Clinic of a Medical Treatment Facility (MTF).

  • Performs a variety of professional, direct, clinical healthcare duties within gastroenterology, including evaluation of routine colon cancer screenings, management of moderately complex acute and chronic illnesses, and utilization of ancillary services and consultants. Records outpatient records, including admission and discharge paperwork and progress notes required by hospital regulations and standards of practice.
  • As part of primary clinical evaluation, takes health and medical history from patients or family members; records findings; examines, performs initial work‑up, and assesses care and treatment; determines the need for and orders laboratory tests, X‑rays, and other procedures, including endoscopic evaluation, and appropriate referrals to specialties or subspecialties to ensure a complete patient assessment.
  • Discriminates between normal and abnormal findings, recognizes early stages of serious physical, emotional, or mental problems; provides surveillance of chronically ill patients; adjusts regimens within established protocols; recognizes conditions requiring referral to a Gastroenterology Physician; collaborates with physicians in patient management and therapeutic plan revision; decides on specific methodology based on patient needs; refers complex gastroenterological problems for physician management.
  • Diagnoses disease, illness, disorder, or injury; institutes treatment; seeks advice of appropriate physicians for serious or uncommon conditions; prescribes medications; treats a variety of diseases, disorders, and injuries; follows up with routine or directed visits for chronic illnesses; writes routine orders for outpatients; orders, administers, and dispenses prescribed medications and controlled substances in accordance with approved treatment protocols; documents all procedures and treatments in patient records;

    provides consultation, teaching, and coordination with patients and family.
  • Collaborates with physician advisor regarding management of the most complex gastroenterology patients, such as inflammatory bowel disease, requiring biological therapy or corticosteroid treatment; evaluates and revises therapeutic plans; refers unstable patients to physicians; plans with other health‑care professionals and agencies; coordinates health care; documents all observations, plans, treatments, and teaching in patient records; identifies components of the nursing regimen that may be delegated to other nursing personnel.

    Basic Requirement for Advanced Practice Nurse:

    Degree: A graduate or higher level degree from an accredited professional nursing educational program; accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

    Foreign Degree: A degree from a foreign nursing school; official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

    Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a state, DC, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory; must have passed the National Council Licensure…
