Responsibilities

Serves as a credentialed Nurse Practitioner, providing services to adult patients within the Gastroenterology Clinic of a Medical Treatment Facility (MTF).

  • Performs a variety of professional, direct, clinical healthcare duties within the field of Gastroenterology, including evaluation of routine colon cancer screenings, management of moderately complex acute and chronic gastrointestinal illnesses, utilization of appropriate ancillary services and consultants, and record‑keeping of admission, discharge, and progress notes as required by hospital regulations and standards of practice.
  • As part of primary clinical evaluation, takes health and medical history from patients and records findings, examines patients, performs initial work‑up and assessment of care and treatment; determines the need for and orders laboratory tests, X‑rays, and other procedures, including endoscopic evaluation when necessary, and makes appropriate referrals to specialties or subspecialties to ensure a complete patient assessment.
  • Discerns normal from abnormal findings to recognize early stages of serious physical, emotional, or mental problems; provides surveillance of chronically ill patients, adjusting regimens within established protocols, and identifies conditions that require referral to a Gastroenterology Physician.
  • Collaborates with physicians in patient management, evaluation, and revision of therapeutic plans; decides on specific methodology based on patients’ needs, and refers extremely complex gastroenterological problems for physician management.
  • Diagnoses disease, illness, disorder, or injury, institutes treatment, and seeks advice from appropriate physicians for more serious or uncommon conditions; prescribes medications and treats a variety of diseases and injuries; manages routine or directed follow‑up and treatment of chronic illnesses previously documented in medical records.
  • Provides consultation, teaching, and coordination with patients and their families regarding treatment and medical care.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens.

Basic Requirements for an Advanced Practice Nurse:

  • Degree:
    Graduate or higher‑level degree from an accredited professional nursing educational program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
  • Foreign Degree:
    Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
  • Licensure:
    Current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory; and must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination.
  • Specialty Licensure:
    Current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse in the specialty of Anesthesia or a related specialty from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, the following qualifications are required:

  • Professional nursing experience at the GS‑12 level:
    One or more full years of professional nursing experience that includes administering anesthetics to patients and monitoring patients receiving anesthesia care.
  • This position requires qualification using experience alone; substitution of education for experience is not permitted.
