In this role as an experienced Equipment Technician, you will be supporting Pierce County’s vital infrastructure efforts performing a full range of maintenance and repair, rebuilds and preventative maintenance functions on diesel, gas, and EV powered vehicles, equipment, trailers, generators, and more. Your success will come being a well disciplined self starter dedicated to the position. Your skill and ability to inspect, diagnose, adjust, maintain, and repair automotive and construction equipment using and operating hand and power tools, electronic and mechanical testing equipment, and welding equipment used in automotive and equipment repair will be essential. You will need to have the ability to estimate time and materials needed to complete assignments, while demonstrating sufficient strength, agility, and dexterity to perform the work of the position.

Core daily responsibilities:- Perform progressive preventative maintenance on gas and diesel powered vehicles, trailers, and associated equipment.
- Perform full range of maintenance and repair functions on gas and diesel powered vehicles, trailers, and associated equipment.
- Inspect, determine needed repairs, and repair pickup trucks, dump trucks, road construction equipment, and related county owned vehicles and trailers.
- Repair automobiles, buses, trucks, and other road construction equipment. Examine vehicles and discuss with operators the nature and extent of damage or malfunction. Plan work procedures, using charts, technical manuals, and experience.
- May operate a specially equipped mechanic’s truck out of a central shop area or satellite shop and make standard mechanical repairs and adjustments or improvise emergency repairs, including welding, in the field to all types of road equipment and mechanical plant facilities.
- Perform welding and fabrication as needed to maintain equipment using various types of welding and cutting equipment.
- Completion of a relevant and recognized apprenticeship program.
- Certification as Master Technician from Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
- Full journey level status in Automotive Machinists’ Union.
- Four years of work experience as a full-time assistant to a journey level mechanic.
- Possession of a valid Washington State Driver’s License.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within six months, a valid Washington State Commercial Driver’s License Class A (Planning and Public Works Department only).
