Wireless Communications Systems Technician

About the Role

As a Wireless Communications Systems Technician you will operate as a journeyman level technician that provides 24x7 maintenance, installation, and support of the WSP public safety communication systems which consist of digital microwave radio systems, land mobile radio base stations and repeaters, voting systems, communications consoles, and various other infrastructure equipment. Additionally, you will provide maintenance, installation, and support of mobile and portable two-way radios, telecommunications devices such as VoIP telephones, and various other agency electronic equipment support needs.

You may be assigned to perform system-level administration and monitoring of complex networked radio and data systems and equipment.

• Perform semi-annual and/or annual preventive maintenance and repairs on live microwave radio system equipment, land mobile radio infrastructure equipment, dispatch consoles, telecommunications equipment, and data network equipment per division preventive maintenance schedules.
• Perform monthly inspections of assigned communications sites and ensure these sites are kept in clean, safe, and fully functional condition.
• Provides WSP and contracted outside agencies installation, programming, and repairs for walk-in or scheduled appointments in assigned geographical location.
• Must be available outside of normal business hours to respond to system outages and will participate in a standby rotation.
• Respond to Emergency Communication System service outages and restore service to affected parties as quickly as possible.

Travel statewide is required for agency and division functions, training, WSP infrastructure support and project support, and this may result in overnight stays. A WSP employee with an assigned take-home vehicle shall live within forty-five (45) miles of their assigned district, division or duty station.

• High School diploma or GED equivalent.
• Must possess or obtain a valid Washington State driver's license.
• Two years of formal education or training in electronics.
• Five years of paid experience in maintenance and repair of at least one of the following:
  • Two-way radio systems and equipment
  • Digital Microwave carrier systems.
  • Wireless and wired data network systems
• Experience and understanding of computer based applications.
• Knowledge and understanding of computer networks, wiring standards and protocols.

NOTE:

This is not a full-time telework position. Candidates must be able and willing to work in the office and commute. A hybrid work schedule may be available after training and/or probationary period has been successfully completed.
