A Traffic Control Flagger plays a critical role in maintaining road safety by directing vehicles and pedestrians around work zones. This position is typically part of a labor union, offering benefits, job protections, and adherence to collective bargaining agreements.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic around construction zones using flags, stop/slow paddles, and hand signals.
  • Communicate with work crews to ensure a safe and efficient flow of traffic.
  • Set up and remove traffic control devices such as cones, barricades, and signs.
  • Monitor traffic conditions and adjust signals or instructions as necessary.
  • Follow safety regulations, guidelines, and company policies to prevent accidents.
  • Use radios or other communication devices to coordinate with other flaggers and site supervisors.
  • Report any safety hazards or incidents to the supervisor.
Requirements:
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Certification in traffic control flagging (varies by state, e.g., ATSSA or state DOT certification).
  • Ability to stand for long periods and work in various weather conditions.
  • Good communication skills and situational awareness.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Membership in a labor union (or willingness to join).
  • Valid Driver's License required in certain positions.
Work Environment:
  • Outdoor job, often in high-traffic areas.
  • Exposure to weather conditions and potential road hazards.
  • Requires wearing safety gear such as reflective vests, hard hats, and steel-toed boots.
