Transit Parts Specialist

At Metro, the Transit Parts Specialist maintains accurate inventories of parts, equipment, and supplies that support transit fleet and facility maintenance. The work involves ensuring accuracy of inventories in automated vehicle maintenance systems, resolving discrepancies, verifying shipments and billing, and assisting fleet maintenance personnel by identifying and issuing required items.

Responsibilities
  • Order, receive, inspect, store, and issue inventory for automotive, coach, and heavy-duty equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Maintain appropriate stock levels through cost-effective inventory control and maintain manual and automated systems for accurate vehicle maintenance and inventory databases.
  • Process all phases of inventory changes, including collecting and processing inventory for sale or salvage; research inventory needs; prepare and stock materials to designated locations; conduct periodic inventory cycle counts and spot checks.
  • Assist mechanics and other shop employees in identifying and obtaining required parts, components, and supplies.
  • Request stock transfers from other parts rooms and order special stock or supplies from vendors when internal stock is unavailable.
  • Check incoming stock against slips, bills of lading, purchase orders, and delivery receipts; enter arrivals into inventory databases; charge items to appropriate cost centers.
  • Prepare storage space for incoming stock; load and unload shipments using forklifts and overhead cranes.
  • Prepare and assemble parts kits for storage and later disbursement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience working in a warehouse or parts room environment: ordering, receiving, stocking, storing, and issuing parts, equipment, materials, and supplies safely, efficiently, and using a computerized inventory system.
  • Basic knowledge of inventory best practices and demonstrated ability to use an Enterprise Asset Management System.
  • Ability to read and understand parts catalogs and technical publications written for automotive and/or heavy-duty diesel or truck parts.
  • Ability to receive, store, and issue parts, equipment, materials, and supplies safely and efficiently.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and maintain effective work relationships and provide good customer service.
Desired Qualifications
  • Completion of the Transit Parts Specialist Workforce Development Program.
  • Completion of a vocational warehousing and/or parts counter training program.
  • Parts room experience in a diesel, transit coach, automotive, or marine repair industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, prioritize, and provide customer service.
Special Requirements
  • A valid Washington State driver’s license and acceptable 5-year driving record.
  • Must pass a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination.
Work Schedule and Location
  • 40-hour week, non-exempt, eligible for overtime.
  • Work performed in a 24/7 facility with three shifts; employees must be able and willing to work any shift and at any King County Vehicle Maintenance location (Tukwila, SODO/Downtown Seattle, Bellevue, North Seattle/Shoreline).
