Job Summary
The Release of Information Specialist will continuously and consistently safeguard the patient’s rights to privacy by ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to the patient’s medical information and all releases of information comply with the request, authorization, company, and HIPAA policies. Additionally, they will work daily with confidential and personal health information in a conscientious manner providing patients and other requestors with the appropriate level of service.
Job DutiesInteracts with requestors to identify medical records needed for patient care, review, billing, or release of information. Prioritizes release of information requests, retrieves medical records from active and inactive locations, electronically tracks, and delivers records following established procedures. Performs self‑quality checks on all work to assure the accuracy of the release and confidentiality. Handles all requests and inquiries for patient health information whether received via mail, fax, phone, or in person.
Verifies patient identity. Ensures the requesting party has a legal right to request a patient’s medical information. Provides excellent customer service by being attentive and respectful, ensures understanding of customer requests and follows-through as promised, and is proactive in identifying client concerns or problems. Helps respectfully resolve customer service matters. Accesses computerized patient records and/or other computer systems for patient information needed for faxing and for other requestors of the medical record.
Maintains current knowledge related to applicable statutes, regulations, and guidelines. Other duties may be assigned.
No supervisory responsibility.
Qualifications Educational RequirementHigh school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one (1) year of specialized training or education.
Experience RequirementAt least one (1) year of experience in a related field.
Computer SkillsAn individual should know Database software, Spreadsheet software, and Word Processing software.
Certificates, Licenses, RegistrationsNone required.
Other QualificationsThe employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG’s Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA’s List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG’s List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
