Position: Medical Laboratory Technician I

Job Summary

Conducts a variety of laboratory tests and duties according to established laboratory procedure, and in compliance with Cherokee Nation Policies and Procedures, Rural Health Guidelines and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA '88), and Commission on Office Laboratory Accreditation (COLA) regulations, while working under the supervision of a Laboratory Supervisor and/or Laboratory Director.

Job Duties
  • Providing health care services to individuals eligible for services in accordance with the self-governance compact and funding agreement between the Cherokee Nation and United States executed under the authority of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act.
  • Practicing only within the boundaries of competence, based on documented education, training, supervised experience, state and national professional credentials, and appropriate professional experience.
  • Providing health services of a scope, quality, and quantity consistent with Cherokee Nation policies.
  • Collecting laboratory specimens such as urine, blood, etc., and ensuring these specimens are collected at the proper time and patients have received proper instructions and/or preparation.
  • Determining adequacy, identification and appropriateness of specimens according to test procedures and the laboratory's specimen acceptance/rejection criteria.
  • Performing specimen testing and preparing specimens appropriately according to test procedure being performed.
  • Maintaining integrity of specimens.
  • Performing and documenting quality control.
  • Resolving technical problems and taking remedial actions whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Ensuring that patient's results are not reported until all corrective action has been taken and the test system is functioning properly.
  • Calculating and arranging quality control data in a meaningful and concise manner.
  • Operating and maintaining laboratory instruments according to established protocols.
  • Performing routine maintenance, calibration, and standardization on all instruments within an established time frame.
  • Keeping accurate and up-to-date records of such performance and quality control checks.
  • Recognizing any malfunction of instruments and taking immediate corrective action to restore proper operation of the instruments.
  • Notifying clinicians when test results will be delayed.
  • Following all safety policies and procedures including but not limited to general safety, hazardous communication, Chemical Hygiene Plan and Blood Borne Pathogens.
  • Adhering to professional ethical standards.
  • Maintaining verifiable records at an institution or facility that has a published records retention policy that is equal to or exceeds the retention required by federal, tribal and/or state regulations.
  • Maintaining the confidentiality of any information received from any person or source about a client/patient, unless authorized in writing by the client/patient or required by law or court order.
  • Complying with the applicable state and federal regulations in regard to the security, safety and confidentiality of any health services record created, maintained, transferred, or destroyed, whether the record is written, taped, computerized, or stored in any other medium.

Qualifications
  • EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and less than one year of specialized training or education related to Medical Laboratory Asstance School or Medical Laboratory CME.
  • Experience Requirement: Three years experience in a related field performing moderate or high complexity testing in a Medical Laboratory.
  • Computer

    Skills:

    Knowledge of Database software.
  • CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must have a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.
