Experience in Labor & Delivery
Description:
BLS, NRP, and Fetal Heart Monitoring are required for the unit. The facility can cancel 1 shift every other week. An OB nurse is needed with approximately 15-17 births per month. The nurse will provide care in Labor & Delivery as well as Mother-Baby, Newborn Nursery, and Couplet Care. Gynecology surgery patients will also be assigned. There may be a need to float to Med/Surg if there are no patients.
If uncomfortable taking patients on the Med/Surg floor, the nurse will assist with vitals, passing medications, and other supportive tasks. The RN will handle responsibilities within their scope for laboring patients, triage, and mother-baby care. The RN will likely work alongside an LPN. The LPN cannot "labor" or triage patients and is not able to perform initial assessments. However, the LPN can assist the RN with various tasks, including EFM evaluations, turning patients, and documentation.
As a baby nurse, the LPN's initial assessment needs to be validated by the RN. If additional help is required, staff can request assistance from the Transfer Coordinator. In emergencies, the LPN typically accompanies the patient to the OR, allowing the RN to stay on the unit for triage needs. Being in a small unit requires creativity in problem-solving, but there is excellent support and resources available when needed.
