Laboratory Technician

Job Summary

This is a part-time, grant funded position, assigned to assist with lab work and maintenance related to specific scientific research projects in the biomedical field.

Major Duties

  • Animal tissue preparation and microdissections
  • Carrying out and optimizing experimental protocols
  • Data analysis and interpretation
  • Brightfield and fluorescence microscopy imaging
  • Manuscript/publication preparation
  • Presenting data at conferences
  • Lab supply ordering, receiving, and related financial processing
  • Train and coordinate with undergraduate and graduate students
  • Administrative support to Primary Investigator

Knowledge Required by the Position

  • General biomedical laboratory protocols
  • Understanding of microscopy techniques
  • Design and optimization of biochemistry and molecular biology protocols
  • Computer skills: MS Excel, MS Word, data handling and entry
  • Detailed documentation of work for reporting and meticulous lab notebook recordkeeping
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

Supervisory Controls

The supervisor assigns work in terms of goals and objectives and requires the use of good judgment and independence. The supervisor reviews the work to check the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines

Guidelines include general laboratory safety protocols, department and university policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

Complexity/Scope of Work

  • Some of the work is routine and is performed under supervision, with the opportunity to make decisions and be in contact with other professionals in this line of research.
  • This work is based on the NSU-Tahlequah campus.
  • The responsibility of designing and optimizing experimental protocols, analyzing data, writing manuscripts, and presenting at conferences contributes to the complexity of the work.
  • The purpose of this position is to provide technical laboratory and administrative support in the execution of the sponsored project.

Contacts

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers; some contact with other professionals in the field may be required.
  • Contacts are typically to support units and to give or exchange information; to resolve problems.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts heavy objects, climbs ladders, distinguishes between shades of color and utilizes their sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in a laboratory setting and requires the use of personal protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves etc.
  • The work will regularly be performed on the NSU-Tahlequah campus.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility

This position has no direct supervision over assigned personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of bachelor's degree
  • At least two years of relevant laboratory experience or commiserate experience
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, or related field
  • Familiarity with microscopy techniques
  • Understanding of biochemistry and molecular biology techniques, including antibody methods
  • Knowledge and interest in diabetes, diabetic retinopathy, vascular disease, and/or ophthalmology

Hourly salary $18.00
