Assistant or Associate Professor in Criminal Justice

Position Overview:

Talladega College invites applications for a tenure-track position in the Criminal Justice Program at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, depending on qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will join the faculty in the School of Social Sciences & Education, contributing to a dynamic academic environment that prepares students for careers in law enforcement, corrections, criminal law, and related fields. The individual in this role will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in criminal justice, engage in scholarly research, advise students, and participate in departmental and college-wide service.

Specific

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    A Ph.D. or J.D. in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a closely related field. Candidates with a Master's degree and significant professional experience in the criminal justice field may also be considered.
  • Experience:
    • Assistant Professor:
      At least 2 years of teaching experience at the collegiate level (can include graduate assistantships).
    • Associate Professor: A minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in criminal justice or criminology, with a record of scholarly publications, presentations, and service to the academic community.
    • Experience in both the theoretical and applied aspects of criminal justice (e.g., law enforcement, corrections, criminal law, etc.).
    • Experience in advising students, curriculum development, and program assessment is highly desirable.
  • Other Requirements:
    • A strong commitment to teaching excellence and student engagement.
    • Demonstrated ability to incorporate innovative teaching methods and technology into the classroom.
    • Experience in scholarly research, with an interest in engaging in both individual and collaborative research projects.
    • A commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the classroom and the criminal justice field.
    • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional

    Experience:

    Significant professional experience in law enforcement, corrections, or other criminal justice agencies.
  • Research Focus: A strong research agenda in criminal justice or criminology, with publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at academic conferences.
  • Community Engagement:
    Experience working with local criminal justice agencies, law enforcement organizations, or community outreach programs.
  • Grant Writing:
    Experience in securing external funding for research or program development.
  • Service to the Profession:
    Active membership in criminal justice or criminology professional organizations (e.g., American Society of Criminology, Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences).

Job Responsibilities:

The Assistant or Associate Professor in Criminal Justice will have the following key responsibilities:

  • Teaching & Instruction:
    • Teach undergraduate courses in criminal justice, criminology, and related areas, including core courses and specialized electives.
    • Design and implement engaging course materials, including lectures, assignments, and assessments.
    • Use innovative teaching methods, including technology, experiential learning, and service learning, to enhance student learning outcomes.
    • Foster an inclusive classroom environment that supports diverse learning needs.
  • Student Advising & Mentorship:
    • Provide academic advising to undergraduate students in the Criminal Justice program.
    • Mentor students in their academic and professional development, including offering guidance on internships, career opportunities, and graduate study.
    • Support student involvement in extracurricular activities related to criminal justice (e.g., criminal justice club, internships).
  • Research & Scholarly Activity:
    • Maintain an active research agenda in the field of criminal justice or criminology.
    • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at academic conferences.
